The article blames this on the sale of young rural girls as concubines to rich men. It completely ignores what is far more likely the primary cause - female infanticide. Young girls have been murdered in China for thousands of years, one missionary in 1844 reported that 1/4 to 1/3 of girls were killed at birth. Wikipedia has a good summary for anyone who wants to read it. It's important to note that it isn't due to communism, it is a very long-term cultural practice in China - the communists actually saw it as a serious social problem and managed to greatly reduce it through the 50's-70's, but it then re-emerged when they brought in the one-child-policy in the 80's.
