(Article) Why Gen Z Is Ditching The Girlboss For The Tradwife

For women who have observed the unhappy zero-sum battle of the sexes, many feel that the modern world, for all its promises, has failed them.

Hannah Neeleman, a Utah-based cattle farmer and mother of eight, is perhaps the most popular Instagram“tradwife” — a growing category of social media influencers who reject the not-so-traditional 9-to-5 workforce in favor of homeschooling their children, homemaking, or running a family business. Though her content is entirely wholesome, she (and other tradwife accounts) are not without controversy.

In the case of Ballerina Farm, followers recently uncovered that Daniel Neeleman, Hannah’s husband, is the son of the founder and former CEO of JetBlue, whose estimated net worth is $400 million.

Her kitchen stove, prominently featured in many of Hannah’s videos where she bakes sourdough bread, farm-raised beef, and other dishes, costs a minimum of $20,000. For those who laud their simple lifestyle as cattle farmers, many felt blindsided by the wealth enabling their smooth transition to homesteading. Afterall, starting a farm requires many high-cost purchases on the front end from the land, equipment, and animals, forcing many farmers into perpetual debt.

Yet Hannah and other tradwife accounts will easily maintain their prominence going into 2024. For many women, who increasingly report “persistent feelings of sadness and hopelessness” and disillusionment with the “girlboss” lifestyle, these influencers offer an idyllic alternative to urban life. They are illuminating a deeper hunger among women, especially among Generation Z.

A quick search on Google Trends shows that the term “tradwife” gained popularity in 2018 but peaked in 2020 as the pandemic accelerated women’s return to the home. Instead of being confined to religious or ultra-wealthy women, the tradwife movement entered mainstream discussions. It offered women the chance to reclaim the ingredients of happiness — faith, family, community, and meaningful work — back from the career-focused model they grew up with.

Popular online accounts (Links in the article)) tend to show women who don the clothes and lifestyle that they perceive women in a previous era embodied: shirtwaist dresses, aprons, a rejection of formal work outside the home, and a heavy emphasis on homemaking and care for children.

Instead of finding the home stuffy, boring, or trivial, many women found greater purpose and satisfaction than they previously imagined. Initially, the pandemic gave women the ultimate “permission slip” to explore the domestic realm (stay inside to stay alive). Later, popular and aesthetically pleasing tradwife accounts gave women the encouragement they needed to combat the outspoken expectations that all women, even mothers, ought to rejoin the 9-to-5 workforce.

It’s worth considering why Gen Z women, who have the most professional opportunities and fewest barriers to education, work, and politics, would flock in large numbers to tradwife influencers. No doubt the online accounts are more intense in their expressions of femininity, homemaking, or anti-feminist sentiment than the average follower, but then, this is always the case with influencers.

For Gen Z women who have observed the unhappy zero-sum game that is the battle of the sexes, many feel that the modern world, for all its promises, has failed them. They’re looking for an older, and truer, model for how to live a good life. Or, as Carmel Richardson said, “There are too many elders who give bad advice about marriage and family. I am trying to become the matriarch I want to see in the world.”

Similarly, it’s worth asking why this movement provokes many others to mockery or disgust. As one influencer said, “What if their husband leaves them? Then how will they support themselves?” For women who grew up observing the impact of no-fault divorce, family breakdown, the sexual revolution, and the rigid careerism of the 1990s, it seems as though their plan for survival is to depend on no one, especially a man, to provide for them.

The exhaustion and subsequent disenchantment this has produced in Gen Z is enough to spark a counterrevolution.

An interesting article I found today. Thought it should be shared! There's more of it at the link if you want to read more.

Online tradwives don't have good reputation in my circles.

1. Properly sexually serviced wives don't have need to search attention online.

2. They are still feminists by thinking, just different some seductive variant. Men still exists for women, not mutual cooperation.

Those traditional wives who focus on pleasing their man have nothing to worry about in regards to their man leaving them. Traditional women are few and far between. Good men know the treasure she is and works diligently to provide what she needs and make her as happy as the wife makes him.

I was struck by the same passage as Nick but had other thoughts

The girl boss single girl out there in the world thing can go a few directions.
- delay marriage while racking up the body count whether it is short, medium or long term relationships, degrade you ability to bond by cranking those numbers and in time there will never be a real connection. Box wine, cats and bitterness.
- delay children till it is too late for more than one or delay them entirely and feel empty with your shelf of lame corporate plaques and lucite recognition of time spent working for generic company
- marry work kids daycare divorce, eork boyfriend boyfriend work boyfriend casual lays illegitimate kid work more daycare another marriage to have some help and maybe stop working and care for your kids...oh and his kids that hit your kids. But sorry, you got to go to work

Sure makes trad wife and trad life look boring I suppose.
Certainly wouldn't want to consider an even older style of trad wife. One where you have sister wives as help meets, allo parents and people to look to for support as well as to buttress in return.
Certainly would be boring as can be to marry a guy who is so into being married and family life that he wants to double or triple down on it.
Should definitely take that 78k student debt for a BA in european lit and eventually an entry level position in human resources or work your way up in customer service.
Far better option
Clearly

Not all men are that smart, more than a few have succumbed to the excitement of an illicit relationship and ruined what they had.
In our world, of course, a relationship can be added. But the mainstream cannot go that route.

You don't know any actual women, do you?
Nice try.

Since you aren't Twitter user you missed show on New Year Eve on Twitter in tradwife circles.

Here are interesting parts:

For those not in current situation, OnlyFans is famous as porn-like subscription service.

I even learned new phrase: Trad Thot. Traditional whore. So now we have women behaving as whores, while claiming they are traditional and conservative. What a time to be alive. 🤪🤪🤪🤪

What a time to be alive. I even used this phrase thrice in same day.

They are two key rules which man must follow with women:
1. Drop her if she resists moving toward sex
2. If not sexually interested treat her exactly as you would male friend

Why these rules? Because otherwise man becomes woman's love plan B. Investing resources while getting nothing in return (carrying her baggage from shopping doesn't count). It results in one-side relationship. She gets benefits, while he can't get anything he desires.

Only reason men accept this BS is because it works in like 5% of cases when chads aren't available and she is desperate for any male attention.

Second reason is far worse. It's taught as right way by society. Be a nice guy. Just sacrifice for other while getting nothing. It's disgusting. Pure simping. Remember simp is hoping he will get some sexual action.

What do think will woman's bikini suit picture on social media cause? Men's attention. It advert for some male attention. Which attention. Certainly not lets just be friends.

Since women are aware of above mechanic, they use it on purpose. Showing body is certain to find male attention and fill her stable of simps. From when is OK for married Christian woman to seek sexual attention from men not her husband?

This is way "properly serviced" wives aren't online stars. They are too busy keeping hubby and children happy. It's only ones desirious of man or replacement for current one, who are busy online searching for simps and replacement.

Add all above doesn't matter as much as point 2. Tradwives are often pure feminists. Only interested in just themselves, no need to think of men's interests. They are just smarter feminists, ones smart enough not to directly piss off men.

And for your info. I was married. And another lady ask me directly in front my lady to be my second wife.
