For anyone interested in Jewish holidays,

We've been counting the omer night since First fruits (Nisan 16) and we counted 49 and then we have this holiday.

Today is the holiday of Shavuot (weeks) or (sevens) it's been 7 weeks since first fruits holiday.
Traditionally this is the birthday of the ten commandments.
Also during the counting to Shavuot in Yeshua's day after he rose, on the 40th day of the counting of the Omer... Yeshua ascended to heaven instructing his disciples to stay until Shavuot in Jerusalem (10 days without Him)...
All of Yeshua's appearances after resurrection where in that counting of the Omer time which we just finished.

So here we are!
Happy Shavuot to any celebrators out there or others interested!
Am Yisrael chai! Ode Avinu chai! The people of Israel yet live! Our Father yet lives!

I have so much to learn. Is this one of the three commanded festivals?
Yes
Deut. 16:9-11

"7 weeks you shall count for yourself from the start of the start of the sickle against the standing grain (harvest time) you shall start to count 7 weeks. And you shall do the holiday of Shavuot (weeks) for Adonai your G-d , according to the freewill portion of your hand which you shall give according to (how) Adonai your G-d has blessed you. And you shall rejoice before Adonai your
G-d; you and your son and your daughter and your servant and your female servant, and the Levi who is at your gates and the foreignor and the orphan and the widow who are in your midst in the place where Adonai your G-d blesses to inhabit His name there."

Exodus: 34:22-23

"The holiday (foot festival) of Shavuot (weeks) you shall do for yourself first fruits of the harvest of wheat, and a holiday of gathering (harvest) in due time (in a circuit).
Three times in the year shall present all your males before the L-rd Adonai (Hashem) the G-d of Israel" [the 3 times are Passover, Shavuot, and Sukhot, the 3 foot festivals]

Levit 23:15-16

"And you shall count for yourselves from the day after the Sabbath from the day you all bring in the Omer (bundled harvest), the wave offering, 7 Sabbaths completely there shall be.
Until the day after the 7th Sabbath you all shall count 50 days then you shall draw near a new offering(present) for the L-rd (Hashem)."

So we start counting the omer every night from Nisan 16 (2nd day of Passover season.. .counting excitedly for 50, the day after 7 weeks, and that's today Shavuot)!
That's also why there were so many foreign language speakers in Jerusalem since it was a command to go up to Jerusalem for this holiday, Jews came from all over, the countries outside of Israel for this holiday. Hence the miracle on Pentacost (which is called that because it means 50th in Greek and Shavuot is on the 50th count of the omer).

By the way a nice, customizable Biblical Calendar if anyone is interested; integrates with websites, ios calendar, android etc. You can make it show the Hebrew month days, holidays, torah readings, daf yomi, etc. Look up your birthday to see what biblical calendar day you were born on... then you get 2 birthdays a year :p

If you wanna celebrate and you're stuck at work or something, just read the 10 commandments. It's the birthday of the 10 commandments; if you have extra time it's traditional to read the book of Ruth (but not a command)

So we just get to throw a party? I'm not being derisive I'm just asking how its to be celebrated.

It's a good question.

1-we do not work, it's a sabbath day
2-we eat dairy products
3-read 10 commandments
4-read book of Ruth
5-we say a blessing to G-d thanking Him for keeping us alive to reach this time
6-we eat a loaf of bread
7-we stay up all night studying bible (since it's 10 commandments bday) [I'm in a different time zone and I fell asleep; failed to stay up all night]
8-try to add little things that you enjoy to the day because one of the commands is "you shall rejoice" but it says "before the L-rd your G-d" so it's good to list the things we are grateful for in life

It's great to see another count their sabbaths from the correct day. Ive not met any others who do and there are so many opinions and so much misinformation on which sabbath you are to begin counting from.

I have an Orthodox Jewish coworker (who's always great to talk with) who took the day off for Shavout/Pentecost. I was asking him the day before about how they celebrated, and he mentioned the whole stay-up-all-night-studying thing (Ish's #7). He said they usually stayed up until about 5 am before passing out. He was also slightly surprised that I, as a Christian, wasn't already aware of the date of Pentecost (he knew that's when we Christians believe the Holy Spirit came). I had to explain that my church wasn't really that big into following a liturgical calendar like some are. "Maybe celebrating that is more of a Pentacostal thing?" he ventured. :D
