Dr. J. Vernon McGee has quite an imagination

His ideas may have come from extra-Biblical ancient Jewish writings...

That is possible, Cecil. I think the Word of God supplies much more for our understanding than what he offered. Do any of our members have any insight into this? I am always willing to learn, but we need to be very careful. He did one program where he disavowed polygyny also, so I have good reason to doubt his ability to keep opinion out of his teaching. I still like the guy, but I still am very cautious not to espouse doctrine just because some radio preacher does.

This is one reason why it is much better to reference one's information sources. Stating something as fact based on your own imagination is deceitful. Claiming as Biblical authority one's own opinion is dangerous. One need not necessarily cite every reference, but as this program has been available for decades with notes, downloadable MP3, and heard all over the world in many languages, I think citation would be important.

I have been guilty of this myself at times, and that is probably why I am so touchy about it. I was gently admonished to not allow pride to destroy me or make ministry ineffective. Rather than just proclaim something as true, one would do well to just state it as opinion. This is general, not an attack on a brother who has long since gone on to glory. This might be how we got monogamy only as the standard doctrine, claiming authority where none exists or supposing a bit too much. The only authority I have is from the Word of God, to Him be the glory for His wisdom and truth.

Yup. And all this stuff he's saying is NOT stuff I've ever heard before.

The truth is, chances are very good that Boaz WAS already married at the time, based upon the culture and what little is actually revealed in the Book. But that, too, is supposition.
