This debate has come up on a New Zealand news site and this was one of the comments made.

And for those quoting the bible - Jesus was healthy. He was not dying of any horrible, painful disease. He knew the Romans were going to put him to death, and let them do so. This, according to your arguments, would qualify as assisted suicide and is thus against god's law.

Now that's a different look at it huh!

Thoughts?

It's certainly an interesting way to look at it!

Jesus didn't go and ask them to kill him. He actually prayed asking the Father to NOT make him have to die! So it wasn't a deliberate suicide on his part. It was however a deliberate decision of the Father to send Him to be killed though, as that was the whole point of His time on earth. That doesn't sound nice either. The cross is offensive, it always has been, but it's still true.

Just for the fun of arguing such a bizarre premise, ...

Doesn't Paul say that Jesus essentially TRAPPED or AMBUSHED the devil into killing Him, for if the demons and people had truly understood what was being accomplished, they would have refused to put him to death?

That DOES sorta sound like a Suicide By Policeman scenario! However necessary, efficacious for the salvation of the world (and, specifically, ME!), and offensive.

Doesn't seem like a particularly profitable perspective, but definitely diverting.

If Jesus went up on the cross for a living sacrifice what if we were to judge that being his wife and told him that he shouldn't b/c that's like a type of killing yourself. What if we were Jesus' wife what would you think say or do, really put yourself in that situation. Would you judge him, or fear that he was doing the wrong thing. That's not total submission unto him, that's not totally following Him. Jesus did what God told him to do, He said Father if this cup can pass from me, nevertheless not my will but your will be done.
