How can we know there is eternal life without dying?

I mean know with 100% certainty instead of just having a really good set of reasons to believe and many feelings or experiences.

John 3:16 (NKJV)

"For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life."

I guess it comes down to whether or not you believe that the Bible is the inerrant Word Of God. If you do, then trust what is written between the covers. :)

Blessings,
Fairlight

We know we have eternal life, because the first-fruits of the resurrection, Jesus Christ our Lord, rose from the dead. This is the sign of His authority and promise that He was God, and he promised eternal life to those that believe on His name.

The Bible presents a clear path to eternal life. First, we must recognize that we have sinned against God: "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:23). We have all done things that are displeasing to God, which makes us deserving of punishment. Since all our sins are ultimately against an eternal God, only an eternal punishment is sufficient. "The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 6:23).

However, Jesus Christ, the sinless (1 Peter 2:22), eternal Son of God became a man (John 1:1,14) and died to pay our penalty. "God demonstrates His love for us in this: while we were still sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8). Jesus Christ died on the cross (John 19:31-42), taking the punishment that we deserve (2 Corinthians 5:21). Three days later He rose from the dead (1 Corinthians 15:1-4), proving His victory over sin and death. "In His great mercy He has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead" (1 Peter 1:3).

By faith, we must change our mindset regarding Christ - who He is, what He did, and why - for salvation (Acts 3:19). If we place our faith in Him, trusting His death on the cross to pay for our sins, we will be forgiven and receive the promise of eternal life in heaven. "For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son so that anyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life" (John 3:16). "If you confess with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord,' and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved" (Romans 10:9). Faith alone in the finished work of Christ on the cross is the only true path to eternal life! "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith - and this not of yourselves, it is the gift of God - not by works, so that no one can boast" (Ephesians 2:8-9).

If you want to accept Jesus Christ as your Savior, here is a sample prayer. Remember, saying this prayer or any other prayer will not save you. It is only trusting in Christ that can save you from sin. This prayer is simply a way to express to God your faith in Him and thank Him for providing for your salvation. "God, I know that I have sinned against you and deserve punishment. But Jesus Christ took the punishment that I deserve so that through faith in Him I could be forgiven. I place my trust in You for salvation. Thank You for Your wonderful grace and forgiveness - the gift of eternal life! Amen!"

21 You may say to yourselves, “How can we know when a message has not been spoken by the LORD?” 22 If what a prophet proclaims in the name of the LORD does not take place or come true, that is a message the LORD has not spoken. That prophet has spoken presumptuously, so do not be alarmed.

Deuteronomy 18:21-22 NIV 2011

This test enables you to find out if someone is a false prophet, but if a prophet predicted 75 things in a row correctly with no errors you still would not know they are a prophet based on this test, they just would not have been shown to be a false prophet yet. If the 76th event they "prophetically" predicted is false and shown to be false irrefutably then you would suddenly know they were a false prophet after they looked like a true prophet all along.

Of course it is obvious that people who get history wrong when claiming to speak for God like Muhammad are false prophets, but when people make no errors (yet) it is more difficult to tell, they have not been shown to be a false prophet yet having made no errors, but if they make an error in the future (specifically an error where they claimed to speak for God in a special specific prophetic way not some error where they did not claim to speak for God in a special specific prophetic way) they will be shown to be a false prophet.

How can we know the Bible is the Word Of God with 100% certainty without dying?

If Jesus rose from the dead. But then we died and did not rise from the dead that would mean we would know the Bible is wrong on that 1 thing but only after it is too late, but of course maybe then we would not know anything. Until we die we would not have tested all the prophetic claims (such as the afterlife claims) to know the prophets of the Bible did not fail to fail the false prophet test on all the prophecies.

If a book is correct on 99 out of 99 events that occurred before event 100 is yet tested, but then it is wrong on event 100 you might not know that until event 100 occurred.

What if it is correct on 100% of things so far but then you find out it is incorrect on something in the future but you do not find that out until the future time?

So someone might object we might have good reason to trust what the Bible says about eternal life for salvation if it has a 100% record for all we knew about how to test so far but we would not actually know with 100% certainty until we die?

How can we trust a book to tell us about what happens after we die with 100% certainty when we will only know if the book is correct after we die?

I am not saying this to despise the Bible (at least I hope that I hope I am not) but hopefully my motive is to try to know how to know with 100% certainty how to have good eternal life.

DTT,

Here's how you can know with 100% that YOU will have life after death:

“Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God” (John 1:12).

“You must be born again”

When visited by the religious leader, Nicodemus, Jesus did not immediately assure him of heaven. Instead, Christ said, “I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again” (John 3:3).

The first time a person is born, he inherits the sin nature that stems from Adam’s disobedience in the Garden of Eden. No one has to teach a child how to sin. He naturally follows his own wrong desires, leading to such sins as lying, stealing, and hating. Rather than being a child of God, he is a child of disobedience and wrath.

“As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our sinful nature and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature objects of wrath” (Ephesians 2:1-3).

As children of wrath, we deserve to be separated from God in hell. Thankfully, the passage continues, “But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved” (Ephesians 2:4-5). How are we made alive with Christ / born again / made a child of God? We must receive Jesus!

Receive Jesus

“Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God—” (John 1:12). This passage clearly explains how to become God’s child. We must receive Jesus by believing in Him. What must we believe about Jesus?

First, we must recognize that Jesus is the eternal Son of God who became man. Born through the power of the Holy Spirit by the virgin Mary, Jesus did not inherit Adam’s sin nature. Therefore, He is called the second Adam (1 Corinthians 15:22). While Adam’s one disobedience brought the curse of sin on the world, Christ’s perfect life can cover our sinful ones. Our response must be to repent (turn from sin), trusting His perfect life to purify us.

Second, we must have faith in Jesus as Savior. God’s plan was to sacrifice His perfect Son on the cross to pay the punishment we deserve for our sin: death. Christ’s death frees those who receive Him from the penalty and power of sin.

Finally, we must follow Jesus as Lord. After raising up Christ as the Victor over sin and death, God gave Him all authority (Ephesians 1:20-23). Jesus leads all who receive Him; He will judge all who reject Him (Acts 10:42). By God’s grace giving us repentance and faith in the Savior and Lord, we’re born again to new life as God’s child. Only those who receive Jesus—not merely knowing about Him but relying on Him for salvation, submitting to Him as Master, and loving Him as the supreme treasure—become God’s children.

Become a child of God

Just as we had no part in our natural birth, we cannot cause ourselves to be born into God’s family by doing good deeds or conjuring up faith of our own. God is the one who “gave the right” according to His gracious will. “How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God!” (1 John 3:1, emphasis added). Thus, God’s child has nothing to be proud about but boasts only in the Lord (Ephesians 2:8-9).

A child grows up to look like his parents. Similarly, God wants His children to become more and more like Jesus Christ. Although only in heaven will we be perfect, a child of God will not habitually, unrepentantly sin. “Dear children, do not let anyone lead you astray. He who does what is right is righteous, just as he is righteous. He who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work. No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God’s seed remains in him; he cannot go on sinning, because he has been born of God. This is how we know who the children of God are and who the children of the devil are: Anyone who does not do what is right is not a child of God; nor is anyone who does not love his brother” (1 John 3:7-10).

Make no mistake—a child of God cannot be “disowned” by sinning. But someone who “practices” sin (i.e. consistently enjoys sin without heed for following Christ and His Word) reveals that he was never born again. Jesus told such people, “You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desire” (John 8:44). God’s children, on the other hand, no longer crave the gratification of sin but desire to know, love, and glorify their Father.

The rewards of being God’s child are immeasurable. As God’s child, we are a part of His family (the church), promised a home in heaven, and given the right to approach God in prayer as Father (Ephesians 2:19; 1 Peter 1:3-6; Romans 8:15). Respond to God’s call to repent of sin and believe in Christ. Become God’s child today!

Have you accepted Jesus Christ as your personal Savior? To properly understand this question, you must first understand the terms “Jesus Christ,” “personal,” and “Savior.”

Who is Jesus Christ? Many people will acknowledge Jesus Christ as a good man, a great teacher, or even a prophet of God. These things are definitely true of Jesus, but they do not fully define who He truly is. The Bible tells us that Jesus is God in the flesh, God in human form (see John 1:1, 14). God came to earth to teach us, heal us, correct us, forgive us—and die for us! Jesus Christ is God, the Creator, the sovereign Lord. Have you accepted this Jesus?

What is a Savior, and why do we need a Savior? The Bible tells us that we have all sinned; we have all committed evil acts (Romans 3:10-18). As a result of our sin, we deserve God's anger and judgment. The only just punishment for sins committed against an infinite and eternal God is an infinite punishment (Romans 6:23; Revelation 20:11-15). That is why we need a Savior!

Jesus Christ came to earth and died in our place. Jesus' death was an infinite payment for our sins (2 Corinthians 5:21). Jesus died to pay the penalty for our sins (Romans 5:8). Jesus paid the price so that we would not have to. Jesus' resurrection from the dead proved that His death was sufficient to pay the penalty for our sins. That is why Jesus is the one and only Savior (John 14:6; Acts 4:12)! Are you trusting in Jesus as your Savior?

Is Jesus your “personal” Savior? Many people view Christianity as attending church, performing rituals, and/or not committing certain sins. That is not Christianity. True Christianity is a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Accepting Jesus as your personal Savior means placing your own personal faith and trust in Him. No one is saved by the faith of others. No one is forgiven by doing certain deeds. The only way to be saved is to personally accept Jesus as your Savior, trusting in His death as the payment for your sins and His resurrection as your guarantee of eternal life (John 3:16). Is Jesus personally your Savior?

If you want to accept Jesus Christ as your personal Savior, say the following words to God. Remember, saying this prayer or any other prayer will not save you. Only believing in Jesus Christ and His finished work on the cross for you can save you from sin. This prayer is simply a way to express to God your faith in Him and thank Him for providing for your salvation. “God, I know that I have sinned against You and deserve punishment. But I believe Jesus Christ took the punishment I deserve so that through faith in Him I could be forgiven. I receive Your offer of forgiveness and place my trust in You for salvation. I accept Jesus as my personal Savior! Thank You for Your wonderful grace and forgiveness—the gift of eternal life! Amen!”

Let's say someone thinks they accepted Jesus in the way that leads to eternal life. And they seem to experience God. And they trust scriptural promises to eternal life as applicable to them to mean they have eternal life. And they believe there is a God and the Bible is the Word of God based on experience and reason. But they do not think they know with 100% certainty any of it.

How do they know that they are correct with 100% certainty?

How do they know they did not merely deceive themselves with feelings after praying the prayer?

Mormons pray a prayer and supposedly claim to believe it shows them the book of Mormon is true, but are self-deceived and or deceived and or deceiving.

I want to be 100% sure I am not self-deceived.

And 100% sure I have eternal life.

I do not want to be 99.999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999% sure but 100% sure.

I do not know how to know it without dying. And I do not want to face-death without knowing it. And I do not know how to avoid facing death forever.

I want to know how to know without having to die to find out, because I need to know before it is too late.

(I currently intend to live as long as ethically possible and am in no rush to die overall)

I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.
1 John 5:13 NIV 2011

Does this mean somehow we can know with 100% certainty?

Is it actually possible to know with 100% certainty?

Does this verse actually mean 100% certainty, or does it just mean know with some unspecified degree of certainty?

I want to know with 100% certainty if I can.

If it means with 100% certainty please specify how we can know with 100% certainty.

Does everyone who has good eternal life, know with 100% certainty that there is an afterlife and that they will have good eternal life before they die, or do some people die without 100% certainty that there is an afterlife and without 100% certainty that they will have a good eternal life only to find out that they have the good eternal life after they die? Do some people know with 100% certainty before they die, if so how?

DTT,
You are asking the most important questions that a person has to deal with in this world. Yes, we can know with 100% certainty that we have eternal life, that we will go to heaven when we die. Here is some encouragement to help you or anyone else to know how. Doc gave you many excellent points and verses, he is telling you the real Gospel truth. However, often people think that saying the right prayer will do the trick. Praying the right prayer is important, but there is more, it is about believing the Truth of God's Word. When we really believe (convinced by God of His love for us) then we will pray from the heart, the right prayer. We can learn the words of that prayer anytime, but if our heart is not in it, then they are just words with no effect.

Romans 10:8-17
But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach; That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher, And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things! But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report? So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
I recommend that you read the Gospel of John, over and over until God begins to show you His love for you through Jesus Christ. Don't read it analytically, but seeking to know God from your heart. As you read His Word, God will begin to show you faith in Christ. Don't quit reading and give up, keep reading until God convinces you and you can believe Him. Then you will have certainty. That is faith, believing God (from the heart, not intellectually).

Hebrews 11:6
But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

DTT

Do you believe in the perfect and full inspiration of Scripture? If you do then the answer about the afterlife is found in Luke 16:19-31. The after life is described there. It boils down to whether or not you accept the testimony of Scripture as the final authority on all matters of faith, which includes the afterlife.

Dear DTT,

Jesus Christ answered your question in the Gospel of John, chapter 5, verse 24: "Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgement, but has passed from death into life"

Eternal life begins at the point of faith in Jesus as Savior from sin rather than at the moment of physical death.

Jesus didn't say that we will pobably have eternal life, or that the odds are really good that we would not come into judgment. No-- He said we have eternal life from the moment we believe, and in believing we have eternal life with God in heaven to look forward to.

Embrace that spiritual fact. That will give you the freedom to focus on the renewal of your mind (Rom. 12:1; Eph. 4:23,24), the cultivation of the fruit of the Spirit (Gal. 5:22,23) and the restoration of the image of Jesus Christ in your spirit (Rom. 8:29).

This is it.

Eternal life right now.

Suzanne the tail-feather tweaker :P

DTT,

I think that your question has been adequately answered. I am locking the thread from further discussion.
