Interesting Graphic

Where'd you find this, Doc?

It is very interesting. However it's a bit misleading too.
- The places where polygamy is supposedly "illegal", in most cases just don't recognise polygamous unions legally. There is no law against de-facto polygamy in most of these countries, so it is misleading to call polygamy "illegal".
- A number of the countries where polygamy is "legal" may only allow it for Muslims due to a recognition of Sharia law, and may ban it for non-Muslims.

So it's a fascinating place to start, but don't think "Hey, Indonesia is blue, let's move there" - check the details of the law first because all may not be as it seems! The map is a good guide where to start looking though.

If any of our Aussie members really want legal recognition for a second marriage, looks like they just need to get married abroad and come back home again. Interesting. That's like how my great-great-grandfather wanted to marry his deceased wife's sister, the Anglican church wouldn't let him in England, so they got married in Scotland then came home again. Which just goes to show that legal marriage has been completely ridiculous for centuries...

And in South Africa this is the case not with Muslims but certain African Tribes. But those not a member of that Cultural background cannot have a legal Polygamous marriage.

Only if they originally come from the Country where Polygamy is allowed.

look for the new classification:
Polygamy illegal, constitutionally banned, except Muslim.

In the Philippines, which the map shows as orange or under political consideration, polygyny is legal only under sharia law, for Muslims.

It has never been under political consideration for the rest of the country. We are too firmly in the grip of the Catholic church and its daughters for that to happen. Although our politicians flaunt their machismo and mistresses, they are too afraid of the church and it would be political suicide even to speak about polygyny in a positive light, much more publicly support it.

Besides, monogamy makes a good excuse for not committing to one's mistress.
