Mode of Dress

I have noticed since moving down here to the south that there are more women that take modest dress, dresses, no cutting hair, no make-up, full length sleeves etc very seriously, I was just wondering what the opinions of the ladies here at BF were. Beth has expressed the desire to banish our pants and go to skirts and dresses, but I have not been fully on board with that - I like my comfy pants and freedom to sit on the floor and run in the grass etc without the hindrance of skirts, as I have always told my girls if you are going to dress like a lady you have to act like one. Thoughts ladies?

We live in Oklahoma and here we have a good mix in my area of women who prefer modest dresses to pants. Personally I have been wearing more dresses because I encourage my daughter to wear them. My mother and I are actually going to start making modest dresses for all of us girls in the family. :) I haven't cut my hair in almost 5 years and even though I threaten to cut it each summer I don't think I could! Every time I try to cut more than just an inch or so I hear this little voice telling me that a woman's hair is her crowning glory. I figure that is the Holy Spirit telling me to leave it alone! LOL

I think that not cutting your hair and wearing the longer skirts/dresses is a personal conviction. Unless you are part of one of the denominations that require women to not wear pants at all. I wear pants and capri's and I also wear sun dresses and skirts.

I asked my DH what he preferred and he told me what ever makes me happy and comfortable! However he does prefer my hair long! ;)

Hi (Val here) I fully agree that it comes down to personal conviction. I actually wear skirts out of personal prefrence not conviction. I still wear pants from time to time but I do notice that people tend to be treat more like a lady when I'm wearing skirts. I know it seems silly because I'm the same person weither I wear skirts or pants but it's just something I noticed.

I agree that it's a personal conviction or choice. My hubby doesn't care one way or the other. I tend toward pants in the winter and skirts or modest shorts in summer(I really love skorts, cause they give me the skirt look with the flexibility of shorts.) I own my own house cleaning business, so it would be a bit difficult to do what I do in a skirt. We live on a farm, so pants are just more convenient for all the stuff we do. As far as the hair, again, it's a choice, I think. I used to do the "big hair" thing, half a can of hairspray to hold it in place, and the whole full face makeup thing, too. It's probably been 4 years since I've put on a speck of make up. ANd it's been at least 7 years since I've done more than trim my dead ends.99% of the time my hair is up in a high ponytail, again it's for convenience more than a directive of any kind. Hubby likes it long, and though it can be a pain taking care of it, it's a small thing to make him happy. But having said that I can also honestly say that if I cut it all off tomorrow I don't think it would bother him too much. Whatever made me happy would be okay with him.

I live in a region with a large Mennonite culture, so the dresses and hair restrained in a bonnet is a common sight.

However, I personally really like a comfy pair of faded blue jeans, or even shorts. :) And of course, where I work, we all have uniforms. My particular position does not allow me to wear a dress or skirt, but rather I must wear slacks. (shrug)

Mr. Froggie does not like his women to wear make-up, and as a general rule I don't bother with it (too much hassle) :P However, in Ruth's position, she is required to wear make-up at work, and to have her hair looking it's best. Lately, because of my ruddy complexion, I have begun to wear just a light layer of foundation, to smooth out my complexion, and that's it-- no eye make-up. As for hair... I used to have it long. Mr. Froggie prefers long hair too. But I just got really sick and tired of it, and needed a change... so last month I got it professionally cut for the first time in over a decade. I got something like ten or twelve inches hacked off. Mr. Froggie's first response was, "It's too short." But I think he's gotten over it. I'm still getting a lot of compliments about it at work, and it sure saves me time in the bathroom getting ready in the morning.

I believe it should be personal choice. I am from NC and I wear pants/shorts/capri's mostly because they are comfortable to me. My husband prefer's skirts but he does not get all bent out of shape about it and wants me to be comfortable in what I am wearing. Skirts/dresses are very comfortable but I enjoy the comfort of sitting Indian style without any worries. I think you should talk about your feelings on it and let each pick which they prefer. That is my opinion anyway.

A women's hair is her glory, men, well most men like long hair.

In what ever manner we choose to adorn our bodies, we should always consider our respect of God, our husbands, and our selves. I personally believe that interpretation of modest dress and manners must be a personal conviction. Within my own family some choose pants, some skirts and dresses, some cover their arms, some choose to cover their hair partially, and some fully. I tend to wear jeans or full length skirts and loose fitting blouses; to me, modesty means not drawing attention to your self. For this reason I would not wear short shorts and a tank top, or on the other extreme, a prairie dress and high fronted hair.
I have always been told, and I tell my own daughters; A woman's modesty is more appealing than her greatest physical asset

thanks ladies I appreciate all the input and hearing everyone's opinion. Beth likes wearing skirts more than I do, she thinks they are comfy, I like shorts or capris cause I sit cross legged alot. I have to wear capris or slacks or long skirts to work, but frankly the pants are easier to find in the required colors. When I want to feel particularly girly I like to wear skirts and when I dress up I wear skirts. I agree it is all a personal preference thing and really was just wondering about every one's preferences.

I consider dresses and skirts to be "dressed up" and I love dressing up when the occasion presents itself. But my work requires a uniform. I dress modestly by habit and I believe that you can dress modestly in pants. I have seen women who wear "dresses" only because they want to be modest but those dresses leave nothing to the imagination. I believe that modest should be discussed among family members and agreed upon. In our family, we try very hard to always look modest but decent, because we want our walk to reflect honor and glory to our Father in heaven.

Totally agree! I do not suit dresses that come to my knees or even half way down my calves as they make me look short. And I prefer something with sleeves. Impossible! I spent far too long searching for a wedding dress with sleeves. I ended up getting my mother in law to make a wee jacket to go over it.
Oh, and I am err...well endowed...most dresses don't cover enough. And if they do, I can't breast feed in them. Sigh. This is why I stick to trousers and skirts!

Are you any good at sewing Mary? Perhaps you could start a business :D

I cannot sew. I have tried and tried and I just don't get it. My hands just won't do it properly

with today's modern sewing machines you mostly don't have to know how to sew. Just how to read and follow directions. or maybe we could set up some workshops at the next retreat. ooh i like that idea.

Workshops at the next retreat sounds like a great idea. Wish I could come!

Perhaps when I have more time on my hands I could encourage Samuel to get me a proper sewing machine. I currently only have an old Singer treadle one. At the moment it's buried under things in the garage as I never use it. I do some mending by hand but that tends to fall apart half the time  . Sewing is something I really do want to improve on as it's a way I feel I could really bless my family.

You can teach yourself to sew by starting out simple. Start by doing some simple patchwork, sewing blocks of fabric together. Straight lines and no zippers, help you learn how to control the machine. You don't have to do anything fancy for it to be beautiful. Homespun tied quilts are wonderful and warm. Pinning the pieces together is the secret. The more pins you use the better your control. (Don't get crazy with the pins.) I love to sew. Don't get to do nearly enough of it, but hoping to in the near future. I did a beautiful quilt for my mother for Christmas last year. I have made clothing, but it is difficult with curves, gathers and buttons and zippers. Start simple with a pillowcase. Sew lace around the opening to make it special and you will awaken a whole new way to be creative. I love sewing, wish I had more time for it.
