Polygyny and the Overton Window

What has come to be called the "Overton Window" is variously defined as "the range of ideas the public is willing to consider and accept," from politics and economics to religion and - particularly over the last few years, as it has MOVED - sexuality.

For example, that window has moved so far that "homosexuality" - once not even mentioned in polite society, relegated to 'the closet,' and even a matter of political scandal, is not not only "PC," but is celebrated with "pride", and forced down the throats of kids in the public cesspools. Even "transgenderism" - where a mild form was once called 'cross-dressing,' but was STILL prohibited by Scripture - is not only "in the window," but allows for puberty-blockers in pre-pubescents, before their under-developed breasts and genitalia are even being removed.

So how is it that 'grooming' is now subsidized, and adultery rates prime-time TV slots, but polygyny is ostracized?

The answer, again, is the Overton Window.

And the problem, whether we like it or not, is "extremism."

It is "extremism" that moves that Window. Pride flags, "coming out of the closet," and utterly unconstitutional legislative agendas, pushed by then-extremists, finally managed to put Perversion front and center in the window, while anything that might tend to move the window BACK - is NOW 'extremist'.

Talking openly about 'commitment,' and Scripture, and "Covenant," and what He does, and does not allow, was never enough. But when it was SILENCED, there was no opposition, then the window moved.

Do you know what Scripture says about marriage? Great. Can you defend it? WILL you? And if you're not willing to "show your faith by your works" - what the #*!! good is it?

And while it may well be already way too late to save this society, the Overton Window will NEVER even begin to SLOW down the gallop toward Utter Hell on Earth until people who try to "walk in His ways and His Word," begin to realize that they either speak up, and risk being called "extreme" - or worse - or simply give up, and line up for their Mark.

Well, it starts with being OK with polygyny publically.

Obviously. But that is actually NOT a real start; not necessarily even a slight slow-down.

The Overton Window doesn't even BEGIN to reverse until people are willing to do more that just "be OK" with what should be obvious.

And push back AGAINST Evil.

Expanding Overton Window into accepting polygyny doesn't require stopping or reducing evil. It can be made wider.

Removing evil from Overton is serapate problem.

In my opinion, first step is establishing structure as it should be, then removing evil/unnecesarry.

The point was that the Overton window has to do, ultimately, with acceptable "options," and "discourse," in a society. Things that are "outside" it are "verbotten" in said culture - whether they are right or wrong, good or evil.

And when that window has been moved, in any aspect of society, to the point where what is Right, and what is Good, has been moved OUTSIDE of the Overton window, those who walk in obedience to YHVH need to
PUSH IT BACK.

Or, "come out of her," if we can't.

Your post brought to mind this quote:

Extremism in defense of liberty is no vice. Moderation in pursuit of justice is no virtue.

- Karl Hess

A variation on that quote which I also like is:

Moderation in pursuit of pleasure is not a vice. Moderation in defense of principle is not a virtue.

But it's an excellent point, and central to what I was suggesting.

The first link I searched observed that Hess was Goldwater's speechwriter, and then that his "failed campaign" and such rhetoric was the reason why 'libertarianism' remains at the fringes of "AmeriKan politics."

While I don't disagree, and the author focused on "politics" - he would have missed MY point in this thread.

It's not about "victory by any means necessary," which now defines the communist/fascist/totalitarian 'left'. It is about walking in obedience to YHVH, which has virtually ALWAYS been at the 'fringe' of politics, since Genesis chapter 3.

It's why prophets never won a popularity contest, much less an election.

But they were speaking His Word anyway. And there's a point to it, or He wouldn't have told them to do it.
