The word "Adultery"

Is anyone here familiar with the etymology of the word Adultery?

From my research, I've been able to find that the word may have once meant to break devotion. I think the old english could have been something like Advoutry. and then maybe the french Advowtry?

"A" = against or opposed to
"Devotion" =earnest attachment to a cause, person, etc.
A+devotion "means against devotion", then carry that further and we get
A+ dultery --- does it mean the same thing? I think it does.

Also we could go with A-devout. As in not being devout.

I know that the similarity between the English words for "adultery" and "idolatry" is not a coincidence. In a very Biblical sense, they reflect the same concept of being unfaithful to Covenant before Him.
