Biblical marriage-related books:

If you ask us to prove that plural marriage is Biblical and acceptable to God, we are going to ask if you've read many of these items yet. We are pleased that at least 6 of the authors of books or websites listed below have participated in BiblicalFamilies forums or retreats. We look foward to making more great material available to you as we find it.

Tom Shipley's excellent book, Man and Women in Biblical Law, is a must have for anyone serious about digging into the Biblical case for plural marriage. His 2nd book in the series, They Shall Be of One Flesh, is available also. These books are MEAT, not milk. Get the PDF or printed versions here.

Why do you believe that? is a great choice for introducing family and friends to Biblical marriage. Order copies to give away.

Another book for introducing people to the Biblicalness of plural-marriage is The Great Omission by Clyde L. Pinkington, Jr. Clyde runs Patriarch Publishing House where you can pick up hardcopies of many of these books, and some others that may be of interest to you.

The now-famous 1869 book by "James Campbell" (psuedonym): The History and Philosophy of Marriage or Polygamy and Monogamy Compared. Google ebooks now has the entire public domain book for free also, here. (They are such 'copycats'!) Choose Settings/'Flowing Text' for a modern font. While your on Google ebooks, do a search for 'polygamy' - there are some other interesting free older books up there, that we've never seen anywhere else.

If you are seriously researching the history of Christian polygamy, After Polygamy Was Made a Sin by John Cairncross is a must. Here's a review. Google has posted most of the 1st chapter online here. This out-of-print book is now available as a reprint here.

Jay Carper's Commentary on Marriage in the Bible is a great resource. Jay has also made it available for free here. (Please consider a donation.)

Sam Chapman's Polygamy, Bigamy and Human Rights Law book. (free)

James Wesly Stiver's Eros Made Sacred or The Biblical Case for Polygamy (free)

The rediscovered classic: Thelyphthora, or A Treaties on Female Ruin: In Its Casues, Effects, Consequences, Prevention and Remedy; Considered on the Basis of the Divine Law by Martin Madan, is available on Google Books: Volume 1 and Volume 2. It's not an easy read in this 1780 edition, but the content is very worthwhile. (Volume 1 is now on Google ebooks also - where you can choose "Flowing text" to use a modern font.)

Don't expect to agree with everything found in each book - but you should find something helpful in each resource.

Divorce and Remarriage book (which touches on plural marriage):

Divorce and Re-Marriage: Recovering the Biblical View (online and Word version), or buy at Amazon.

This is an interesting book, the author William F. Luck, is well-known in evangelical circles. He's written what we find a very Biblically-sound, scholarly, complete treatment on divorce and remarriage. In doing so, he found he couldn't ignore the implications regarding plural marriage, and was somewhat surpised by what he found. He was just being honest about the truth he found in the Word, making for a compelling argument -though he took a fair amount of grief in theological circles for being willing to make it. Kudos to Professor Luck for being honest on the subject, and for making the book available at bible.org. Some of you may wish to start with Appendix B (On the Morality of Biblical Polygny). (We've started a discussion thread on this book here.)
We are very pleased to have had Mr Luck join us at two retreats - you can see videos and more resources from Mr Luck on our Resources page
