Brits hit by massive marriage tax penalty

UK married couples with children are paying a third more in tax than similar families in other developed countries, according to a new report.

Among the report’s other findings it showed that married couples with children and one earner bringing in up to £33,000 a year pay 18 per cent more tax in the UK than in European countries.

CARE’s report, which also compares the UK system to the USA, says in America a married couple with one earner on an average wage and two children would pay only 48.2 per cent of what a single person would pay. But that figure is 75 per cent for the equivalent situation in the UK.

The government is taking advantage of marriage in Great Britain as well as here in the states. But for taxes, to a greater degree from what you write. It might promote people to abandon the license if it is profitable to do so. Probably a marriage license holds health insurance (in the US, GB has national healthcare I think) and benefits and retirement hostage. Plural has little use for a license, but some do keep it as it is just a piece of paper that enables at least someone to have some benefits.

That's one of the many things that my fiance and I talked about after we got engaged. She wanted a marriage license and I didn't. We finally settled on getting a marriage license, but also agreed on getting a legal divorce later if another lady was to join our family. I guess it would be kinda weird to tell people that we talked about getting divorced before we were even married.
