Samuel! Mate, where do you get this stuff?
I just pulled it out of my...

No, seriously, this is just standard etiquette throughout the Middle East, Africa, India - anywhere poor people have traditionally eaten with their hands and had fewer opportunities to clean themselves. Think a desert nomad, no water to spare to wash with, all water is for drinking. Dirty things with the left hand, clean things (such as eating) with the right. Don't dare touch the communal bowl of food with your left hand.
It's late, I'll give Google as my reference.

Shaking hands is a sign of peace - you hold your sword in your right hand, so if your hand is empty and shaking theirs, you're not trying to kill them.
Also, you'd traditionally wipe your bum with your left hand and eat with your right (in the absence of cleaning facilities), so you'd extend the right hand of fellowship and not the left...
Nothing to do with laying on of hands.
Thank God for toilet paper!

I'm thinking the case where someone is offering to impart the Holy Spirit, or maybe something sort of analogous such as 'an anointing' or a 'baptism of the Holy Spirit'.
I'm thinking that it is an emotional charge and an ego boost, to come to believe that you have some sort of special anointing. I had a coworker tell me that he had cured cancer. When another coworker had brain cancer, we all went to visit him in the hospital. He took this man's hand and said something to him, but none of us could hear what he was saying. The man died about a week later.

Are you saying that the man who touched him said something to the sick man that killed him?

Nope! I have the suspicion though, that since he believed that he was able to heal cancer, he was trying to do so then and there, to no avail.
