Help! I Don't Know What Berean Means

I have heard the term Berean on this site, but I don't know what this term means. I think it means a Christian lifestyle of some sort, but does a Berean attend church? What rituals do they practice, etc.? Any information would be greatly appreciated in a 5th grade reading level, so I can get it. :D

Thanks,
Michelle

Acts 17:11 The Bereans were very glad to receive Paul's message. They studied the Scriptures carefully every day. They wanted to see if what Paul said was true.

So a "Berean" is simply anyone who doesn't just take someone else's word for it, but studies The Word to see if what they are being told is actually true and lines up with what God has already said.

And it's no surprise, of course, that those who come to an understanding of the validity of plural marriage would therefore be "Bereans".

I am glad you asked that because I was wondering the same thing.

Thanks, all...

This reminds all of us (and me, in particular - since I am guilty! ;) ) that when we use the term, particularly in places like the various FAQ's in-progress, that there should be a footnote or something:

"Be like the Bereans*... and search this out for yourself..."

Now I have something to cut-and-paste. :D

Blessings,
Mark

Oh - and PS, Michelle... I like the new pic as well. When the old one went away for a day or so, you had me wondering...

This picture shows how much life and joy there is in you. Thanks for updating it so we can see the real you.

If a cosmetic surgeon thinks your picture looks good you know you're hot! ;)

Maria,
You are looking pretty hot these days too. I wish I could recapture my youth and tight skin.

Thanks again for all the Godly wisdom answers to my millions of questions. I think I would like to live this Berean lifestyle. I wish there was more information on how they actually lived.

I'm humbled by the nice compliments  . It is a good thing that the picture has to be so small that way it doesn't show my laugh lines. I talked with Faithful Servant on Tuesday and, she informed me that the reason my red dye isn't retaining it's color so long anymore is because I'm getting grey. She said it in the upmost Christian-sister love for me, but boy did the truth hurt. Then I told my husband about the grey thing and, he said, "Yeah, I was going to tell you that." Umph, to him! :D

Basically the Bereans were floored by the message of the gospel, but they didn't want to be fooled into some "cult". - -Which at the time "Christianity" was considered as a cult... some wacko fringe nut group of the Jews. They also referred to this "cult" as THE WAY. - -
- So before they drank that "grape Kool-Aid" the Bereans wanted to do a fact check. "Everyone" knew that this cult was filled with cannibals (take my flesh and blood) and were anarchists (HIS kingdom is coming soon).

The issue that makes the Bereans stand out in the Acts is that unlike many other places Paul went, the initial reaction to the gospel wasn't quarrelling but investigation and study in God's word. Which is why in that passage the Bereans are called MORE NOBLE.

God wants us to use our minds in our belief and not be dumb sheep following any leader. - - "My sheep know my voice and come when I call....."

Every good follower of Christ should be like the Bereans and search the scriptures daily.
The teaching of the LORD is his delight, and he studies (or recites) that teaching day and night. Psalm 1:2 NJPST

So does this mean that Bereans still exist or is the term only mentioned in Acts and is not a recognized group such as Lutherans, Methodist, Baptist, etc.?

Outside the christian scriptural definition of Berean, a Berean was a resident of Berea, which was a Macedonian city at the foot of Mt. Bermius. The city is now called Verria, so all those who live there are the modern day "Bereans" by the geographical definition.

Anyone in any denomination could be a Berean. In christian slang, a Berean is defined as a person who studies the scriptures and beliefs individually and does not automatically believe that what someone else, such as a Reverend or Priest, has preached.
I would think that many of the pro-pm'ers on this site are Bereans, because they had to study the scriptures to see if polygyny was sinful or not.

*****Don't feel bad for not knowing all this christian slang lutherangirl, Its a Lutheran thing. ;) I myself being raised Lutheran, I didn't get to learn the christian slang in catechism class. I was too busy memorizing the Athanasian Creed. I hated having to recite that thing on Sunday, it is too long, the Apostles and Nicene are much shorter and easier to recite.
I was "educated" by my dh, whose religious training is more protestant/reformist. Those types know the slang, but they're lucky if they can recite the Nicene. I haven't met a lay Baptist /Methodist /Pentecostal that can recite the athanasian yet, if they even know what it is, or the purpose of it. I work with some christians that can't muddle their way through the 10 commandments - no matter what order they want to put them in.****

Oh, how I hated reciting the Anthansian Creed. One Sunday every year we recite it in church.

My next question goes a little deeper. Is it okay to practice this lifestyle without a fellowship of believers--doing it alone?

I think of it more as an internal attitude, rather than a lifestyle. Regardless of which group of believers you fellowship with, or whether you get your fellowship on-line, the point is to not be blindly credible, but to do all you can to verify for yourself what is said.

Ask for Biblical references. Look them up for yourself. See if they say what is claimed, or whether arguments based upon them actually make sense when the text is read in context. Learn to use greek and hebrew language tools, if possible.

Though it is often harder to do, the same goes for assertions made about history. It's nice to be told that Luther accepted PM. It's better to have a clear quote. Better yet to know where you can find that quote in an original (well, translated) document on-line.

Stuff like that. Obviously, our capacities to do so vary, and we appreciate each others' help and skills on a forum like this.

But the underlying attitude of checking to see that it is right, rather than being passively spoon-fed ideas from whatever source CLAIMS to be authoritative is, as I understand it, the mark of those who are referred to in Biblical jargon as Bereans.

You'd be surprised how often, even in "Christian" books, you'll read some assertion by the author, accompanied by a "supportive text" that, when you go check it out for yourself will have you scratching your head and wondering just how they got THAT idea out of the text!
