Homeschooling a Toddler!

Hi Freebird,
There are two or three Deannes, each spelled differently. Since you used my spelling, I'll assume you're asking my advice. :D Or am I so vain, I probably think this song is about me??? ha ha
Anyway, since I homeschool six, and they're all a year apart, I can relate to your panic. However, if God has called you to do anything, He will equip, strengthen, and lead with His wisdom. He'll also keep your sanity together, regardless of how many days you think you're losing it. One child will be a gentle way to start, and two years old at that. My best advice:
1. Start each day reading the Bible for yourself personally, if you aren't already doing it. Choose a specific book within the Bible to read through, a few verses or a chapter at a time, with notebook and pen beside you. Pray for wisdom and direction. Seek your husband's prayer with you if he is interested (I'm not familiar with who you are and your situation yet). Write one pep talk verse for yourself to post where you can see it during the day. If you don't have this foundation and keep it fresh and thriving, you'll either fail, or "succeed" in your own strength, which merely changes the location of your child's schooling, not the purpose and power of it.
2. At two, your child needs character training in the Lord. If he has trouble with obedience, this is the time to lovingly and firmly teach it, as later it will be more difficult. Proverbs has some great wisdom!
3. Read to your child, a few times a day if possible. Go to the library. Go places together, in addition to the store, dentist visits, etc. Talk with him about the Lord, about ducks and dragonflies, about how things work... Count, draw, and talk some more. Teach him some short bible verses. Pray with him. I'll write more tonight, as I have to get back to "class"!!! ha ha You have an exciting and worthwhile adventure awaiting you, as well as friends to encourage you. --Deanne :D

Hey, Deanne!
I really wished I would have looked at other peoples' screennames before making my name my screenname, because this could get confusing!
I gave her some advice on facebook, so that's what she was referring to. I bet you were like, how does she know I homeschool?
Well, I hope we can meet up in real life sometime! It sounds like we have more in common than just our first names.

Hi again Freebird,
You had asked about some good reading and/or websites in preparation. Here are a few to get you started:
These may or may not be the exact websites, so try Google if you need to.
SOWcurriculum.com
AOP.com
MathUSee.com
Elijah Company
CBD.com
Vision Forum.com
AboveRubies.org

Some great authors on homeschooling and how to go about it: Mary Pride... Charlotte Mason... Ruth Beechik.

Warning: you could sucked into making it too complicated, or collecting too much curriculum, kidding yourself into thinking if only you have more materials, it'll be better. Keep praying and listening to the Lord and your husband. Keep raising your child in His ways. That's most important, not shooting for Harvard! ha ha :D May God bless your efforts. Ray reminded me this morning,
"But Martha was distracted with all her preparations; and she came up to Him, and said, 'Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to do all the serving alone? then tell her to help me.' But the Lord answered and said to her, 'Martha, Martha, you are worried and bothered about so many things; but only a few things are necessary, really, only one, for Mary has chosen the good part, which shall not be taken away from her.'" (Luke 10:40-42)
I also noticed, "'And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what had been spoken to her by the Lord.'" (Luke 1:45, Elizabeth greeting a pregnant, different Mary :) ) We need to remember why we've been blessed with our children, and to raise them in faith, and in His strength.

Hi DeeAnn,
Don't worry about it. I had mentioned I homeschool when I introduced myself a long time ago, but haven't been actively posting for a while, so I wasn't sure. It'd be great to meet sometime. Feel free to send me a private message, too. Have a great day teaching!

Good For you. Now I don't mean to sound like I am putting a damper on all the exitment but is there much homeschooling to be done for a preschooler. Realy my kids learned to count and colors shapes and varied things accidently realy. Osmosis I think, no seriously though I am homeschooling grade 1 and it a work with assignments and everything. But I thought the preschool years were all about, potty training, manners, and comunication. All things you have to teach your child daycare or no daycare. But being an at home mom is a big important job.

If you're still looking for materials, www.letteroftheweek.com is a really great preschool site with lots of ideas for teaching letters and sounds. I used that when I got started, and our oldest is in 4th grade this year.
