Homestead Act

Sitting here this morning thinking about how and where to obtain a country property or piece of land most anywhere in the country (USA) to call my own, and got to thinking about the housing crisis ...

Here's a solution idea: If the government pays off the mortgage on a piece of property via mortgage insurance, the property should NOT then remain with the bank, but go to the government. After all, it just paid for it.

The government should then transfer title to whatever organization administered the Homestead Act, reviving same! Such properties, urban or rural, large or small, should then be published on lists available to the general public who can then file on them on the same basis as it used to be.

"Nominal fee. Live there for 5 years, maintain and improve the property over the state in which you found it, and it's yours!"

Might solve the problem for lots and lots of folks! (Including some / many of us!)

Cecil,

That idea is not beyond the realm of possibility. I read where Mayor Bloomberg of New York suggested something similar to revitalize Detroit with its decaying neighborhoods.

Bloomberg's prescription for Detroit's salvation came in a discussion about what he called a "crisis of confidence" among business people about the nation's economy. Bloomberg said the "most obvious" answer is to encourage immigration.

"This is a country that was built by immigrants ... that became a superpower because of its immigrant population, and unless we continue to have immigrants, we cannot maintain as a superpower," he said.

"Take a look at the big, old, industrial cities, Detroit, for example," he said. "They've got a great mayor, Mayor (Dave) Bing, but the population has left. You've got to do something about that. And if I were the federal government, assuming you could wave a magic wand and pull everybody together, you pass a law letting immigrants come in as long as they agreed to go to Detroit and live there for five or ten years. Start businesses, take jobs, whatever."

If something makes sense, don't expect our government to do it. :o

And, if Bloomberg had his way, then we could make another Dearborn. Honor killings, anyone?
At the risk of sounding snarky, I am not against his 19th century idea, nor am I against anybody of any country coming here who wants to be a true part of the American Experiment, even in its late stages. But if I were an Islamist, I'd target Detroit, buy it up or homestead it, restore it, set up shariah banks, businesses, madrassas, and defy anyone to make me follow the Constitution, possession being 9 points of the law. I don't think Michael has thought this thing through all the way.

This is like Neville Chamberlain suggesting that if Hitler could just annex Austria, he'd decide to not stomp and romp all over Europe. We know how well "peace in our time" worked out...

Nobody would approve of that Cecil.

Hasn't anyone ever heard of an intentional accident?

If the crisis was solved in a way where the government did not give the rich banks free money that would go against the trend.

Solving the poor's problems by giving poor and non-elite rich tax-payers money to select elite banks would go with the trend.

Remember how the rich healthcare companies are the villains that give poor people bad deals therefor to punish them we have to force people to purchase healthcare from the rich companies, thereby increasing the prophet of the rich healthcare "villains?"

Remember how both Obama "Democrat" and Bush "Republican" gave select companies tons of free money to "solve" the economic "crisis."

Steal from the poor and the non-elite rich to give to the elite rich under the name of giving to the poor is the name of the game.
