I’m thinking of a song….

The Revolting Man

I heard a song on the way home tonight, a very popular song, and it struck me that this song was trying to undermine a Christian ideal of marriage and even Christianity itself.

However as I listened to the words (okay, sang them at the top of my voice. Stop being all judgey) I realized it actually describes a Christian patriarchal marriage quite well.

I’ll post the link in a while after people have time to guess which one it is, assuming anyone wants to play my silly little game, but here are some hints:

1) This song captures quite well, and freely utilizes the spiritual dynamic of a patriarchal marriage, one where the bride represents the Church and the husband represents Christ and vice versa.

2) It has a good beat and disco didn’t die, it just evolved.

3) Lace. Lots of lace.

4) In an attempt to be edgy the song actually declares the truth of how a Godly woman should treat her god/husband unironically and surprising accuracy and it would kill them to know that.

I’m going to need another hint. :)

Aarrrrgh!
I have no idea.

Stevie Nicks Leather and Lace?

Is love so fragile
And the heart so hollow
Shatter with words
Impossible to follow
You're saying I'm fragile
I try not to be
I search only
For something
I can't see

I have my own life
And I am stronger
Than you know
But I carry this feeling
When you walked into my house
That you won't be walking out the door
Still I carry this feeling
When you walked into my house
That you won't be walking out the door

Lovers forever
Face to face
My city your mountains
Stay with me stay
I need you to love me
I need you today
Give to me your leather
Take from me
My lace

You in the moonlight
With your sleepy eyes
Could you ever love a man like me
And you were right
When I walked into your house
I knew I'd never want to leave
Sometimes I'm a strong man
Sometimes cold and scared
And sometimes I cry
But that time I saw you
I knew with you to light my nights
Somehow I'd get by

Lovers forever
Face to face
My city your mountains
Stay with me stay
I need you to love me
I need you today
Give to me your leather
Take from me
My lace

Lovers forever
Face to face
My city your mountains
Stay with me stay
I need you to love me
I need you today
Give to me your leather
Take from me
My lace
Take from me
My lace
Take from me
My lace

I'm not exactly sure what the parallels are with God and the Church, but, given the lots of lace angle, I'm going to second Megan's Leather and Lace nomination. However, it should be noted that that's Don Henley (Shiloh; the Eagles) singing the verse that comes from a man's perspective.

The whole "take from me my lace" does also seem to be a nice echoing of "uncovering the nakedness of."

The lace thing was probably misleading. That’s just how I always see Madonna in my mind’s eye. I guess that’s early Madonna and Cyndi Lauper until she is buried in it. Listen to the lyrics. She is making her lover her god. She thinks she’s being blasphemous, little knowing that that is what she’s called to do.

Well, no matter how outrageously she has behaved, Madonna very clearly suffers from an ongoing struggle with the religious beliefs with which she was raised and has never been able to fully shake, despite her efforts at blasphemy.

I do see the parallels, now -- not to mention the disco.

Hard to imagine Madonna fully submitting herself to any authority, though.

Reminds me of our much-earlier discussion of one of her earlier lovers, Camille Paglia.

I still assert that Megan deserves at least an Honorable Mention for "Leather and Lace:" the masculinity of leather and the giving up of the lace fit much better with the aspect of voluntarily submitting to male headship.

I did not know that Madonna and Camille were lovers. That’s interesting.

Hey, maybe you could start a new thread about Songs That Remind Me of Polyandry!

And then I'll just upload a few dozen Madonna songs, not to mention posting her Sex video! Even in that video, she really implies that she's insisting on some mutual submission between her and the character meant to represent Christ.

give us another question, somebody

OK, I'm thinking of a move from the 1930's in which the protagonist gives credit to God for his life's abundance and makes the decisions in his family, his wife is generally submissive and is proud to treat her husband as the center of her life, and their children are generally obedient and respectful. Here's a hint: the credits are predominantly at the beginning of the film and only take about 30 seconds. Oh, and it's in black-and-white.

Okay I just watched the music video for the first time and it’s ridiculous. She even dances stupid. Yikes. Don’t watch the video. It’s bad, like just low grade bad.

Ooh ooh I know! All of them!

Ah, you made me laugh, you revolting man!

You're warm, but you're forgetting about The Wizard of Oz.

Life is a mystery everyone must stand alone
I hear you call my name
And it feels like home

When you call my name it's like a little prayer
I'm down on my knees, I wanna take you there
In the midnight hour
I can feel your power
Just like a prayer
You know I'll take you there

I hear your voice,
It's like an angel sighing
I have no choice,
I hear your voice
Feels like flying

I close my eyes,
Oh, God, I think I'm falling
Out of the sky,
I close my eyes
Heaven help me

[2x]
When you call my name it's like a little prayer
I'm down on my knees, I wanna take you there
In the midnight hour
I can feel your power
Just like a prayer
You know I'll take you there

A mystery everyone must stand alone
I hear you call my name
And it feels like...

[Repeat until the end:]
(Just like a prayer,
I'll take you there
It's like a dream to me)

[2x]
When you call my name it's like a little prayer
I'm down on my knees, I wanna take you there
In the midnight hour
I can feel your power
Just like a prayer
You know I'll take you there

Thank you for the kind compliment! :)
