In 1896, Charles Sheldon wrote the book, "In His Steps", chronicling the fictional experience of a group of people attempting to simply take no action in their various lives and professions without asking first, "What would Jesus do?", then endeavoring to execute the answer in their specific situation.
The book created an absolute storm of controversy at the time, with numerous articles and sermons both pro and con.
Well over 100 years later, the book remains supremely relevant. It is made even more interesting if one reads the biography of the author who seems to have practiced the active involvement in society's ills, much like we talk about doing here.
I find it particularly interesting that Pastor Sheldon well understood the consequences of living a life intentionally mimic-ing Jesus. He wrote, of one of his characters for whom obedience to the pledge brought massive family upheaval:
Many of us on this list can testify to the truth of this description as we have chosen to follow what we find in Scripture as regards Marriage, and Family, and a willingness to make a place in a home for those who have been left out or rejected. If you are a visitor to this site, please consider this well.
But consider also that we readily testify to all that we have GAINED a MASSIVE PROFIT OVERALL, in following our Lord's leading in this controversial yet Biblically undeniable area of life.
No regrets, but for the loss of fellowship with those who have refused to walk the path with us. And for them, so long as there is life, we maintain that there is hope! May Jesus reign supreme in ALL our hearts!

No one but himself knew the bitterness of that family estrangement and misunderstanding of the higher motive. Yet many of the disciples present in the meeting carried similar burdens. These were things which they could not talk about. Henry Maxwell (the pastor in the story), from his knowledge of his people, could almost certainly know that obedience to their pledge had produced in the heart of families separation of sympathy and even the introduction of enmity and hatred. Truly, a man's foes are they of his own household when the rule of Jesus is obeyed by some and disobeyed by others. Jesus is a great divider of life. One must walk parallel with Him or directly across His way.
