Is the writing on the wall for the USA?

Debt ceiling raised, but no structural issues solved - http://www.crikey.com.au/2011/08/01/rundle-debt-deal-the-ideal-compromise-it-pleases-no-one/

S&P downgrades US debt - http://edition.cnn.com/2011/BUSINESS/08/05/global.economy/index.html

Afghan war costs now outpace Iraq's - http://www.usatoday.com/news/military/2010-05-12-afghan_N.htm

US maintains over 1000 foreign military bases - http://monthlyreview.org/2002/03/01/u-s-military-bases-and-empire

The USA has been such a symbol for freedom over the years, but where to from here?

Is this the beginning of the end, or the end of the beginning, or something else entirely?

Personally, I feel that the USA has spent itself into collapse, imitating the USSR just 22 years later. The economy will fade, the empire will go, but the cultural influence will remain through entertainment, media and technology.

But that is my view from afar, I would love to hear from those on the ground.

Land will stay here. Dispossessed and now homeless people will begin squatting, gardening, and protecting "their homesteads". The government? Cities? Outlook is dim. But the IDEAs on which the USA was created are out of the bag, and can never be put back.

I heartily recommend reading Atlas Shrugged. Written in the 50s, it reads like today's headlines, and suggests strongly where this is all headed. Of course, it doesn't take into account the likelihood that Christ will soon do some interfering, but that will only make it more interesting!

Oh, did I forget to say that people will be told that this all results from their failure to obey God according to some folks' interpretations of the Bible? (Witness the moral storm following Katrina.) And this, in turn, will result in religious persecution in the USA. Nothing new -- it has happened before. But be of good cheer, Christ has overcome the world!

In MY outspoken opinion. :D

Hi Cecil. Yes I have read "Atlas Shrugged", but am not sure where the best location for Galt's Gulch is? There are very few free countries left.

Speaking of books, I am currently reading "A Brief History of the Future" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Brief_History_of_the_Future which has a fair bit to say about the USA. It was written in 2006 and predicted collapse for 2035, but recent events seem to have brought forward the timeline somewhat.

It is a one two punch actually...for some time now people have recognized the similarities between the Roman Republic that at one time ruled the known world and the USA - we are right on schedule to duplicate the misfortunes of the great Roman Empire...second this nation was built on the backs of the middle class. The trade policies set in place in 1793 by Alexander Hamilton are the policies that built this great nation by building the middle class. In the 1980s President Clinton signed a number of bills that allowed the corporations to circumvent these trade policies which caused many jobs to be moved overseas where the labor costs are minimal. With the dwindling middle class you have a dwindling tax base. Our government continues to spend as if the middle class is growing - which was the premise for borrowing in the first place (between inflation and a growing middle class we will have no problem paying it back). Now that we have these two things eating away at the fabric of our society it is only a matter of time before the cloth tears and we have a scrap left of what was once a beautiful garment.

"Asians, by some predictions, could constitute as much as two-thirds of the global middle class, shifting the balance of economic power from West to East. Already, some analyses of International Monetary Fund data suggest that the size of the Chinese economy could eclipse that of the United States in just five years."

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/41781471/ns ... kSYxmFrXwM

"While the unemployment rate dropped to 9 percent in January, from a two-decade peak of 10.1 percent in October 2009, many of the jobs people are now taking don't match the pay, the hours, or the benefits of the 8.75 million positions that vanished in the recession, according to Paul Ashworth, chief U.S. economist at Capital Economics in Toronto."

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/43611768/ns ... kSZDmFrXwM

"Two years after economists say the Great Recession ended, the recovery has been the weakest and most lopsided of any since the 1930s...Corporate profits are up by almost half since the recession ended in June 2009. In the first two years after the recessions of 1991 and 2001, profits rose 11 percent and 28 percent, respectively."

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/40827123/ns ... -overseas/

"Corporate profits are up. Stock prices are up. So why isn't anyone hiring?

"Actually, many American companies are — just maybe not in your town. They're hiring overseas, where sales are surging and the pipeline of orders is fat."

Just a few of the not-so-good news articles I have read recently...

Why am I developing business in the Philippines? Because my kids don't stand a chance in the U.S. It wasn't long ago that the cream of the crop from all over the world came to the US to look for good jobs...now the best and brightest of the US are going overseas to get the best jobs.

I love my country (U.S.A.), but I abhor what the politicians and lawyers (who can tell the difference?) have done to its people. We were a nation blessed by God, but now I believe His hand of providence has been removed.

The US is dying a slow and painful death. There is no real place of escape though, I lived in the Philippines for nearly 2 years and the deck is stacked there for the rich against the poor. The only real solution that exists in this new global reality is a small self sufficient farm amongst a community of like minded people. I don't see that happening in the US, but I do see the possibility exists in South America and that my destination.

South America is a big place, anything more specific?

My mental associations for South America are crime, corruption, and inflation. I know Brazil is an emerging economy but dont really want to dedicate the time to learning portugese.

"I lived in the Philippines for nearly 2 years and the deck is stacked there for the rich against the poor."

Agreed, but it seems that is global. There are a lot of opportunities for those who are not afraid to get their hands dirty. Unfortunately most Americans want to sit on the couch, watch TV, drink beer and eat potato chips...fat, dumb, and happy...just as the government wants them...they are a good fit for each other. Even the smallest opportunity is met with enthusiasm here - those are the kind of people I can work with. I tried for years to find qualified people that would actually WORK in the US only to waste a lot of money on pretenders...

"The only real solution that exists in this new global reality is a small self sufficient farm amongst a community of like minded people."

I also agree with this...the way we are living today in big cities is not good.

I am starting to wonder if I am a conspiracy freak or something...yesterday the thought entered my mind that maybe the worst is yet to come. Let me explain, and tell me if my thoughts are going the wrong direction. Interest rates have been set by the Federal Reserve Bank (which isn't a government institution, has no reserves, and is not a bank) at almost 0. So putting money into any type of savings or safe investment will likely end up in a zero or negative net gain due to inflation and taxes. This leaves the stock market as the best place to invest to maximize the return on investment. Once the "powers that be" get people to invest the majority of their money in the stock market they then lead it into another crash by liquidating their holdings at high prices, then at a later time they can "buy low".

"Corporate profits are up by almost half since the recession ended in June 2009. In the first two years after the recessions of 1991 and 2001, profits rose 11 percent and 28 percent, respectively."

Sorry...I'm just to the point that I don't trust anything that resembles government or financial institutions any more...they have sold out the American people and the American way of life. We have our slave labor from illegal immigrants, and our cheap toys from China...and we wonder why there are no jobs...

Neither Obama or Romney is going to change the trend of exponential debt growth (not to mention the unfunded liabilities).
well, while one of them may not understand the need for full reverse thrusters, he still will not call for all available power as we head into the sun like the other one does. ;)

in other words, one is much worse than the other.

Yes I agree that is true, one is much worse than the other.

However the choice is merely an illusion, a charade to encourage people to think they control their destiny; whereas they are really enforcing their own enslavement.

A vote for either is an endorsement of a master - see http://lewrockwell.com/rozeff/rozeff393.html.

Both candidates are products of the establishment and there to serve Government and the forces behind it, not the people.

I agree, though I personally, as a woman vote because I feel that enough women starved themselves in prison to give me that right, I avoid big party politics. Sadly the US system has absolutely stolen all control from the populace and both parties serve one Master and that is Money! They care nothing for the people. We would all be better off without them to be honest.

ylop,
you cannot have it both ways. if one is worse than the other and IF our voting system is not yet completely rigged, our votes will make a difference in how fast our country goes downhill.

the reality, though, is that the US democratic experiment (ok, representative republic as if it matters) is proving that as YHWH and His principles are removed from the focus of the nation it cannot survive. the true enslavement is our rejection of Him and our trust in ourselves. democracy requires altruism to work and mankind on its own just does not have enough.

man has failed again at self governance and has proven the need for the Creator to return and take over as predicted.

bels,
i love ya, kiddo. may your journey bring you to the peace that you are looking for.

I was talking to someone online the other day and he votes - he just writes in his own candidate (in his case he writes "Jesus") as a protest vote against all the other candidates.

The government may also choose to default on a portion of that debt. It's been done before both by the US and other governments. I'm frustrated not only by the politics of both parties but those who put their blind faith in those parties and get into religious like wars over their parties. I've done it in the past myself... I will vote this year but I'm not pleased with my selections. Perhaps I'll just write myself in... :)

I have done a weekly radio show dedicated to the admonition from Revelation 18:4 ("...come out of her, My people, that you do not partake of her sins...) which quite frequently addresses this topic:

http://hebrewnationradio.com/index.php? ... Itemid=119

When the Founders unanimously signed the Declaration of Independence, they agreed that government rests on the "consent of the governed"...and they served lawful notice, and WITHDREW that consent.

Why participate, and thus consent, to a system you know is corrupt, and choose between alleged
"alternatives" that are contrary to the Written Law? Such folks "have their reward".

You cannot "follow a multitude to do evil" (Ex. 23:2) and remain blameless.

http://www.markniwot.com even includes a (hopefully humorous) essay or six on what Scripture says about "voting" -- particularly when it is a rejection of Him. It ain't pretty. :)
