Polygamy in christianity- Wikipedia

“William Luck states that polygyny is not prohibited by the Bible and that it would have been required of a married man who seduced (Ex. 22) or raped (Deut. 22) a virgin, where her father did not veto a marriage.[22]

However, in a book-length consideration of the problem, William Blum argues that monogamy was always God's ideal.[70] He points out that in every Old Testament example where polygynous families were described in any detail, family strife involving the plural wives is also described. He argues that the concept of two becoming one flesh makes polygamy a violation of God's plan for marriage.” Wikipedia - polygamy in christianity- modern views

Someone should add a little more to the section about Dr. Luck’s argument. It makes it sound like that is his only reasoning on the topic.

The very first sentance is wrong.
Let me quote the criticized sentence here as it presently stands:

"Polygamy is a marriage which includes more than two partners."

Wikipedia, by its nature, can change at any time and we wouldn't want later readers here to think we're complaining about that lead sentence once it's already been fixed.

Some thoughts on editing:

By clicking "About Wikipedia" I found a link to a comprehensive introduction for aspiring contributors. Anybody who's intimidated by the prospect of editing would do well to have a look.

Since that bad sentence has a footnote citing an authoritative source, whoever corrects it had better be prepared to show how that source or another backs up the correction. Wikipedia's organizers take citing of sources more seriously than they used to; unverifiable info had been eating at the site's credibility.

In addition to discussing our proposed edits here, we can use the article's Talk page (new topics go at the bottom) for discussion in view of other contributors who are more practiced.

My own experience with editing Wikipedia has been pretty much confined to fixing typos and broken sentences rather than adding new content. So this will be a bit of a new adventure for me as well.

It should say, having multiple marriages

Yes it should. Multiple partners in the same marriage is group marriage not classic polygamy.

It is also an important point doctrinally. All of those verses about marriage between a man and a woman apply. It is just that from a Judeo/Christian perspective the man can have multiple marriages while the woman can only have one, which means that Judeo/Christian polygamy is polygyny.

But the first sentance is wrong and not what most informed Judeo/Christian polygamists believe.

I think I would say, polygamy is a family unit where the husband has more than one marriage simultaneously. But then you have the wikipedia issue where they do not like "original research" so you have to find a reference where someone else says it and it can not be a blog or forum.

The first sentence does need correction, and needs a source, but that's easy. Oxford Dictionary simply says "The practice or custom of having more than one wife or husband at the same time.", which is perfectly accurate, and most other dictionaries use similar wording. If anyone's editing it, just copy a suitable dictionary definition verbatim and link to the dictionary (to make it really easy: https://en.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/polygamy ). The mods can't argue with that.

The reference they do cite is however a good read from a secular perspective, it's a good book to cite somewhere in the chapter for background reading, so I'd try to make sure there's another reference to it in the article rather than recommending deleting it entirely. The book shows that the majority of cultures have been historically polygamous, with polygyny being very common and polyandry exceptionally rare and associated with unique situations, and then looks at historical cases of polygyny and polyandry, very interesting stuff.

Bravo! If we had a forum that had badges, that'd earn one.

Did you keep a reference to that book in there somewhere?

Yes. I was involved in that page early on. It is not unlike a forum argument as people try to control the truth but in this case with edit wars.

In case anyone missed it, if you click on the "Talk" tab at the top of the article you can read the behind the scenes discussion about what should or should not be in the article, or how it should be worded, etc.
