letter to the editor:
Polygamy should be decriminalized

Leslie Jacobs, Fredonia, Ariz.

When you look at world history, and especially biblical history, you will find that polygamy has been an accepted and honorable way of life. Many beloved prophets of the Old Testament were polygamists, and Abraham was a friend of God, all while having many wives. Polygamy was once a lifestyle accepted by all.

For Christians of 2000 years ago, polygamy was stopped by the Roman empire.

Paul, in his letter to the church in Rome, said, “A bishop should be the husband of one wife.” He was simply telling them to obey the law of the land. Roman law is alive and well today in America, and we all know what happened to the Roman Empire.

It’s very unfortunate what has happened in Colorado City, Ariz., and in other states. It has given polygamy a terrible name and image. What has happened there is a blatant distortion of the practice as it existed in times past, and how it could be.

I think that, in time, polygamy is going to be decriminalized and brought back to stay, no matter what we think about it today.

Americans have made a mess of marriage. There are tens of thousands of people practicing polygamy, and the numbers are growing.

While I don't agree with Leslie's interpretation of what Paul meant by "husband of one wife", I am happy to see this published. I think it is little things like this that will begin to make a difference if enough people will do similar things.

Thanks for sharing.

Although the letter from Leslie (gender unspecified) gives wholehearted support to polygamy, it also reveals a gaping perceptual hole that is quite common in Western peoples: The writer is oblivious to the roughly 3/4 of the world's population that have had polygamy all along and consider it nothing remarkable.

People in Western society who think they're restoring polygamy for all the world — and even those who oppose them — could stand to learn a lot from the brown-skinned people who already know what it's about.

Agreed, though I wouldn't include those traditionally considered to be from "western" parts of the world in this statement.
