The real prosperity gospel

God has been dealing with me on the issue of finance of late. He had me write a teaching on this a few weeks back entitled, ‘Show Me the Money’. I also had to recently update it with the new impressions that He made on me. It is freely available for download at the web site listed below on the page with the link entitled ‘Teachings’.

I will be interested in peoples’ responses concerning this issue, because of the scriptures that tell us that there will be a transfer of wealth from the hands of the enemy’s servants into the hands of the righteous, faithful people, during these end-times. I read a book some years ago that speaks to this end. I believe the title of the book was, The Cyrus Anointing. God spoke to me several years ago, (even before I read the book) and showed me a couple of ways that this will take place. I can tell you that what He showed me is not the way that people might think it will happen. That is not really what I want to discuss here, but we can if you want. What I want to discuss here is primarily the fact that many Christians whose heart is to truly serve the Lord are poor or in debt. God has shown me some of the reasons why, but I know He has spoken to others about this and I would like to get their input here as well please. If you have read the teaching that God had me write, this will probably be redundant since most of it will be found in there, especially on page 38. However, here goes...

God showed me last week the areas that my wife and I fall short of receiving His blessing and prosperity. Though we have no debt and lack no good thing, I would like to have more money to use for preaching the gospel and reaching out to the poor in greater ways than we already do. As Joyce Meyer says, ‘Unless you are blessed, you cannot bless others’. The Bible says in Proverbs 10:22, (NKJV)...

22 The blessing of the LORD makes one rich,
And He adds no sorrow with it.

We would probably all like to have this blessing. I know that some of the T.V. preachers and others around the world have given messages on this blessing and how to acquire it; however for most people in the congregations it has remained elusive. This has led to critics labeling this type of preaching, ‘the prosperity gospel’ and saying that it will not work. There are many variants of this theme, but they all fail to produce widespread success in God’s people in the area of finance. The question is why? If we give our tithes and offerings in faith, pray and speak God’s Word over them, should we not be prosperous? Jesus did say that if we give that it will be given back to us multiplied, did He not, (Luke 6:38)? God showed me that the key to understanding why people fail to receive His blessing is found in Psalm chapter 1. There are three main areas that people usually fall short as outlined in verse 1...

Psalm Chapter 1 -

1 Blessed is the man
Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly,
Nor stands in the path of sinners,
Nor sits in the seat of the scornful;
2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD,
And in His law he meditates day and night.
3 He shall be like a tree
Planted by the rivers of water,
That brings forth its fruit in its season,
Whose leaf also shall not wither;
And whatever he does shall prosper.

4 The ungodly are not so,
But are like the chaff which the wind drives away.
5 Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment,
Nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.
6 For the LORD knows the way of the righteous,
But the way of the ungodly shall perish.

The three areas are thus -

1. Operating in human wisdom.
2. Doing things that we should not be doing and hanging out with people that we should not be hanging out with.
3. Saying things that we should not be saying.

My main failure has been in the third of these three areas. I have recently had God put pressure on me to severely curtail the things that I ‘joke’ about, because God showed me that He views it as mocking or scornful. We cannot make fun of others or even ourselves, because we are made in the image of God. We cannot make fun of government or even the authority of the systems that we work under, because God has set those things up for a specific reason, (not the least of which is to see if we can submit to authority, even if it is corrupt). If it is not the Word of God or at least consistent with the Word of God coming from our mouths, it is better that we should not speak at all. If there is error in any of these three areas, then the blessing of the Lord will not be upon us and we will NOT really prosper in ANYTHING that we do. It is as simple as that.

The fourth area is also important and that is to have the things of God in the forefront of our minds. And finally we have to give generously and speak God's Word like water over our 'seeds'.

Therefore, the real prosperity gospel is that of perfection or maturity in Christ. Once we become perfected in Christ, then we will prosper. Until then, God will not give us excess money, no matter how much we give away or sacrifice, because we will only waste it and it will harm us in the long run. He loves us too much for that. One must enter into the spiritual Promised Land and exit the wilderness of just getting by before prosperity will come. One can only enter into the ‘rest’ of the Promised Land by becoming perfected in Christ. The wilderness experience of suffering and just getting by is designed, at least in part, to test our faith and to let God see what is in our heart whether we will obey Him or not. If one cannot be obedient in the wilderness where they just get by, then they will not obey God when there is excess and may even turn from Him and put their salvation at risk, (Deuteronomy chapter 8, Psalm 30, Proverbs 30:7-9 and I Timothy chapter 6).

Thus, if you find yourself in lack or just getting by and want to be truly prosperous, in order to receive the blessing of the Lord, you must, (with God’s help) correct any error in one or more of the three areas listed in Psalm 1:1, focus and stay focused on the things of God and give generously, even to your enemies, (if you want to be perfect - Matthew chapters 5-7 and Luke chapter 6).

Be blessed,

Ray

This is a very good topic. In dealing with people I know in the US and Canada I cant help but assert that discontent makes rich men poor. The contempt for the 'prosperity gospel' comes not because people think God does not want us to prosper, but because a lot of people are attracted to 'prosperity Gospel' out of covetous (Which I believe is directly tied to issue #1 on you're list). Of course the people like the Wittenburg Door staff that have a huge contempt for prosperity preachers do so because they devour widows houses ect too, but that issue is separate from the one you are talking about here.

My family has never made much, but we have had endless investment opportunities ect, we are in debt but with a positive net worth because of assets. For how old we are, and for having had such a short time to work we are doing exceptionally well. We would not be able to afford an extended vacation to go up north if we where not in an exceptional situation. I believe God will do more for us in the future, and we will not have debt at all, but for now we are very blessed and all our needs met and more.

I have seen Christians, even strong ones, that have just barely gotten by, yet they always did get by no matter how bad their circumstances where. I know them enough to say that issue 3 was in their lives, yet I also think that if they did not worry as they did they would have seen more providence in their provision and have a little less bitterness concerning finances.

This is a good writeup, thank you Doctor Raymond.

Money is a hard topic to grasp from all angles. It naturally leads to a discussion of how to pray for blessings. It leads to a discussion of our asking being ruined by a consideration for our own lusts to prevent blessing. It brings a question of an actual return on investment (hundred fold?) and what is an investment. It leads to a discussion of tithing. Is tithing still in effect in the New Test? And if it is still in effect, and the tithe belongs to God, then why should someone expect a blessing for giving God something that is already His. And since offerings are not tithes, should we expect a reward or return for our offerings (not tithes). Should financial help given others be done publicly and a blessing lost because it is not secret? When you have everything you need for a comfortable life, will God continue to bless the fact that you may have got everything right on financial blessing from God and now all you can do is build barns and places to store these nonstop blessings or will God know when to stop even though you continue to do everything right.

Guys, all good points and thanks! :D

I view these things as an example from the natural family perspective. For example, when my 3 year old daughter is for the most part obedient and on the right path then I reward her openly. When she acts up on occasion, I discipline her and withhold my blessing for a period of time. If she were to become openly rebellious, I would withhold that blessing indefinitely and discipline her until she was back on track. I constantly think of ways that I can bless her and when I am out at the shops, I am always looking for something I can buy her, even if it is just a special sweet that I think she may like. I believe that our Heavenly Father is this way with us. He is always thinking of us and ways that He can bless us, but with the eternal perspective of our character development in mind. If it is going to help us be more Godly children, then He will see to it that we have it. If something will hurt our character development in the long run, He will withhold it.

Paying tithes is a minimally obedient starting point. Offerings will be added on top of that and God will bless His people according to the motivation behind the giving, (Galatians 6:6-10, II Corinthians 9:6-15 and others). If one does it out of obligation, then God will return that type of giving with ‘tight-fisted, hard to come by’ blessings. If one does it because they love God and want to do what He says no matter why He says it, then He will reward that type of giving with free flowing ‘return on investment’, (ROI). I contend in the book and other writings God had me do that the individual who is ‘perfected in Christ’ will offer ALL that they have to God without expecting ANYTHING in return and will be grateful for any little thing that He gives them. Once they do that, because they love God and want to please Him and acknowledge that it is all His anyway, He will truly open the floodgates and they will be blessed beyond imagination. They will only store the blessings in ‘barns’ temporarily until God gives them command as to what to do with it all. They will not store it not for themselves and their ‘retirement’. They will continue to work hard until they die or Jesus comes back, (whichever comes first) to multiply the blessings of God even more, so that they can use it for His glory all the more, and so on and so on. The ROI for this action will be limitless.

The bottom line is that it is all a heart issue. One of the reasons that God created money and natural wealth was to give us an opportunity to overcome the very thing that caused Lucifer to fail, (Isaiah 14 and Ezekiel 28). If we fail in this life in the same area by worshipping stuff or even people over God, then we are not worthy of the kingdom of God, (Matt. 10:37-39 and Luke 9:62) and He can destroy people like that in the lake of fire BEFORE He grants them immortality. Though I address these things in the ‘Show Me the Money’ teaching, book and other writings, the principle is very basic...money and wealth are here for our use and not our worship. Like air, water and food, we need money but we are not to focus on it, rather we are to focus on Christ. If we lose focus on Christ, we not be able to walk on the water but will sink. Jesus may still save us, but only by His grace and in spite of our efforts. If we maintain focus on Christ and the things of God, (Psalm 1:2) even when it comes to prosperity, then God will give us more and more as we prove that we can handle it and use it according to His will, ( some of which is to bless us).

The problem is that the power of the kingdom of darkness is money, but the ‘lifeblood’ of the church is also money. Only those who maintain a Godly perspective of natural wealth will be granted the fullness of God’s blessing and be rich beyond recognition. It will happen over the next few years, just as polygyny will, because the scriptures must be fulfilled. Those who want to participate in either must shed their egos, humbly submit to God and be faithful and gratefully obedient to ALL that He has commanded us. For those people, the rewards will be limitless and eternal! I want that. :D

Be blessed,

Ray
