    The distinction would between living a monogamous marriage/lifestyle and having a monogamous marriage with various extracurricular activities. Either way, only monogamy was the only officially recognized marriage.

    The Romans were not monogamous. They had mistresses, slaves, courtesans, and etc. and they certainly did what men do when they have a group of women at their service. Not unlike the current Congress.
