We can’t learn two things from the situation? Who knows, maybe what he “listened to” was: “Wait a second, hon. Let’s hear him out.” Did he listen to that and fail to step in? Either which way, he failed to protect her whilst he also disobeyed.

It's just not the thing that God criticized him for. God criticized him for listening to his wife instead of listening to him. Listening to one's wife is fine, but crosses a line when it comes between the primary relationship of a man to his Maker.
