War and Peace (Leo Tolstoy)

With regard to Covid NZ has certainly been worse than Russia. However, Russia has not been as good as their propaganda to the West tried to imply - throughout it all Putin has talked of freedom in his foreign speeches, while local administrations have put in place vax mandates. But ultimately the Russian people had more balls than the average New Zealander, and they didn't accept things that New Zealander's rolled over and obeyed. So it is less dictatorial, but due to the people's resistance, not necessarily due to a difference in government intent (intent is very hard to judge).

I suppose it is one advantage of a people having revolutions in their collective memories that they are better prepared to resist tyranny.

Eastern Europe was more resistant to Covid crap than Western.
Eastern Europe is more resistant to a variety of nonsense and lies than Western Europe.

Over the centuries, the Slavs (and other smaller Eastern European people's) have faced far more difficult trials than their Western neighbors. The Mongols and the Ottomans never made it to Western Europe.

The Czechs, Slovaks, Poles, Romanians, Serbians, etc understand that sodomy, feminism, and the mass importation of military age Muslim males are not wonderful ideas.

Victor Orban of Hungary is the only national leader I can think of that isn't actively destroying his country (since Bolsonaro, and Trump utterly failed their respective nations).

I use to respect Poland, but they have gone berserk actively pursuing world war three with Russia.

Poland has a lot of history with Russia and like Ukraine, none of it is good.
No doubt that Poland like Ukraine has a lot of history with Russia, and much of it was dark. Nonetheless, the leaders of Poland are actively destroying their country, just like Germany, the UK, and the USA.

Poland is dead set on helping Ukraine because they don't want to have Russia on two of their borders. Also, in December 2021 the Russians made clear that they want Poland and the rest of Eastern Europe back under Russian dominance.

Not. Going. To. Happen.

This is the abusive boyfriend argument. If Poland and Ukraine wouldn’t insist on being independent people then Russia wouldn’t have to invade them.

Yes the west is committing suicide but that doesn’t mean that Russia is the only alternative. And if doesn’t mean that being the enemy of the West’s enemies makes Poland the West.

I go back again and again to the thought that if Russia would try just once to be a partner with its neighbors instead of an overlord then they would flock to be Russian allies. But it’s like Russia is fundamentally incapable of not attempting to amass an old world empire.

It’s so damn stupid. Russia is wants to be the nation state version of Yurtle the Turtle.

If Russia were to do this then they'd end up a superpower again and with the economy to back it up. Instead they are right now equal to Canada with nukes.

And if doesn’t mean that being the enemy of the West’s enemies makes Poland the West.
Given that Prussia was undoubtably the West (one of the major Western powers), and modern Poland occupies much of the territory that was once Prussia, then Poland must either be considered part of the West, or an occupier of part of the West, and the former option is more politically correct...

Perhaps that tendency is very difficult for empire's to avoid, even though it leads to their ruin.

There is no real reason that Russia, Poland, Ukraine, USA, Germany, France, and the UK couldn't be friendly neighbors and cooperative partners doing business together.

WW1 was totally pointless. WW2 was mainly a continuation of WW1. WW3 will also be pointless.

FWIW, WW3 isn't just Russia vs Ukraine, or Russia vs NATO. It's shaping up to be Clown World vs everyone else. I even wonder if Japan and Germany might bail out on Clown World.

Actually there is.

In the West most people can build a successful business of any size, accumulate a decent amount of assets, and expect the government to help protect those assets from criminals.

In Russia the trick is to create a small business and then be careful to hide its success from government so they or one of their friends don't steal it from you. Anyone building something really successful either must be politically connected, they have to leave Russia, or they can anticipate being killed or imprisoned so someone else can steal their assets.

This is part of the fallout of Russia always being a dictatorship and it is also part of the fallout of Russia having been communist. In communism there is central control of all resources (jobs, housing, businesses) and those who control the resources can demand favors for dispensing those resources. Those in power in today's Russia are emulating this aspect of the communist era and they see business as a means of seizing power and exercising dominion. Business is not an end in itself but rather a path to the real goal which is power.

Look at Russia's natural gas market. The ultimate purpose of this industry was not to make money but to exercise power and dominion over Europe. It wasn't a bad strategy from a Russian point of view but it required that the Europeans were less willing to stand up to Russia than to face discomfort.

Turns out the Europeans prefer discomfort and freedom from Russian oppression.

Some people don't know that Italians must have 4 (accounting) books.

One for himself, one for taxman, one for wife and I forgot purpose of last. Greece, Romania and Italy are very good at corruption.

Your comments about corruption hindering business apply to many more countries than just Russia. As Memefan points out below corruption is very common in Roman Catholic countries such as Italy (and I would add Latin America).

Nearly every country that doesn't have deep roots of Biblical Christianity is full of corruption. The Protestant Reformation (in spite of its flaws and weaknesses) did more than anything else to promote the rule of law, and create favorable conditions for business development.

The West became great, because it was more Biblical.

There is a reason the UK, Germany, Netherlands, and their former colonies like the USA, Canada, NZ, Australia, S. Africa etc prospered.

Now that these same nations have largely abandoned the Faith, they are falling into deep corruption like everyone else.

This is a non-sequitur response to my post.
The meme was meant to be a response to your meme, not the post.

Empires are held together by the threat of force and violence. This is true of Tsarist Russia, the USSR, and post Soviet Russia.

The Roman, Ottoman, British, Chinese, and other empires prove the point.

It is also true of the American empire. The war between the States is a clear example of that fact. The USA has been an empire (rather than a nation) since the Civil War.
