The Touch of the Masters Hand​

Twas battered and scarred, and the auctioneer
thought it scarcely worth his while to waste much time on the old violin,
but held it up with a smile; "What am I bidden, good folks," he cried,
"Who'll start the bidding for me?" "A dollar, a dollar"; then two!" "Only
two? Two dollars, and who'll make it three? Three dollars, once; three
dollars twice; going for three.." But no, from the room, far back, a
gray-haired man came forward and picked up the bow; Then, wiping the dust
from the old violin, and tightening the loose strings, he played a melody
pure and sweet as caroling angel sings.

The music ceased, and the auctioneer, with a voice that was quiet and low,
said; "What am I bid for the old violin?" And he held it up with the bow.
A thousand dollars, and who'll make it two? Two thousand! And who'll make
it three? Three thousand, once, three thousand, twice, and going and
gone," said he. The people cheered, but some of them cried, "We do not
quite understnad what changed its worth." Swift came the reply: "The touch
of a master's hand."

And many a man with life out of tune, and battered and scarred with sin,
Is auctioned cheap to the thoughtless crowd, much like the old violin, A
"mess of pottage," a glass of wine; a game - and he travels on. "He is
going" once, and "going twice, He's going and almost gone." But the Master
comes, and the foolish crowd never can quite understand the worth of a soul
and the change that's wrought by the touch of the Master's hand.

It Couldn’t Be Done​

Somebody said that it couldn’t be done
But he with a chuckle replied
That “maybe it couldn’t,” but he would be one
Who wouldn’t say so till he’d tried.
So he buckled right in with the trace of a grin
On his face. If he worried he hid it.
He started to sing as he tackled the thing
That couldn’t be done, and he did it!

Somebody scoffed: “Oh, you’ll never do that;
At least no one ever has done it;”
But he took off his coat and he took off his hat
And the first thing we knew he’d begun it.
With a lift of his chin and a bit of a grin,
Without any doubting or quiddit,
He started to sing as he tackled the thing
That couldn’t be done, and he did it.

There are thousands to tell you it cannot be done,
There are thousands to prophesy failure,
There are thousands to point out to you one by one,
The dangers that wait to assail you.
But just buckle in with a bit of a grin,
Just take off your coat and go to it;
Just start in to sing as you tackle the thing
That “cannot be done,” and you’ll do it.

That poem reminds me of a true to life example. In the movie The Finest Hours, as the crew are heading out in rough seas, as they approached the breaking waves over the bar......they started to sing. That actually happened.

He drew a circle that shut me out-

Mildly miffed that upon reading the title to the post and then going to copy for pasting Kipling's If, just to find out you have good taste as well.

“Invictus” by William Ernest Henley​

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be

In the fell clutch of circumstance

Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

The last stanza is the one I have memorized from reading it long ago.

This particular poem has deep meaning for my grandfather, who recites it perfectly reasonably regularly and relates the historic story of why it has meaning for him. I'm glad to see someone else appreciate it also.
 
The Ideal Husband to His Wife

They met and they talked where the crossroads meet,
Four men from the four winds come,
And they talked of the horse, for they loved the theme,
And never a man was dumb.
The man from the North loved the strength of the horse,
And the man from the East his pace,
And the man from the South loved the speed of the horse,
And the man from the West his grace.

So these four men from the four winds come,
Each paused a space in his course
And smiled in the face of his fellow man
And lovingly talked of the horse.
Then each man parted and went his way
As their different courses ran;
And each man journeyed with peace in his heart
And loving his fellow man.

All Things Bright and Beautiful | Cecil F. Alexander

Good point....same good taste then.

There are several Kipling poems I like but one in particular is another I particularly enjoy but it is foggy enough as it rattles around in my skull that I don't want to look it up until I can clear the cobwebs away from an old memory.
I certainly will be raising my sons on the Just So Stories the same as I was.
