bigamy laws and other states

This is the start of studying bigamy laws. We don't talk about them very often.

Let's say I want to marry a few more wives. I have a wife in Colorado on paper. Who is to stop me from marrying another wife in Wyoming, then taking a wife in Montana, and having them all on paper?

I'm on a very long roadtrip right now and it just has me thinking how logical it would be to have my wife from Colorado, and my wife from Wyoming, and my wife from Montana. It seems like it would be very easy.

So then we get to the taxes. Basically my first wife and I would stay filed as married filing jointly. Then each other wife files as married filing separately. Or, maybe I too file that way.

My understanding is that the bigamy laws were primarily motivated for income tax concerns. Feel free to correct me on that, I can obviously see all the reasons that the adversary wants real families broken up.

If there is no taxation crime or trickery, who cares if I have three marriage certificates in different states? Who prosecutes me then? Am I to believe that the feds are going to come knocking because I am a paper bigamist?

Let me know your experiences or knowledge on this topic.

All I know is, when I checked the local laws, the fact I was married to a woman in a different country meant I wasn't allowed to marry here. It would place me in a situation of bigamy in both countries and I don't want the hassle or drama. Your state laws might be different, I don’t know.

From what I’ve heard, it’s been done. I don’t know the specifics of the taxes.
If one of the wives decides that she wants out is when her lawyer could make it an issue.

I don't mean this to come off as condescending, and I know this is besides the point, but I am really struggling to understand- why would you even want wives in different states? How could you possibly be the husband you need to be for each "family" when you are so far apart from them all? Doesn't that seem like a "quantity over quality" situation where you are the only "beneficiary"? Why would any woman agree to that sort of arrangement?

These are just my musings on the matter, and I am genuinely curious to understand the mindset. Cheers!

I met a guy at a reunion a few years back and he worked on costal shipping. When he gave his testimony, he said he was hardly ever in one place for more than a couple of weeks. He said he had six wives and eight kids located at various ports around the islands - for which he got a huge round of applause from the other guys. For some strange reason the women were more subdued in their response. ;)

Oh that's a great question. I must not have been clear about my thoughts on the matter. I wouldn't want separate families in different places, I agree with your viewpoint. The scope of my thoughts on it was simply limited to marriage licenses for the purpose of granting each wife a paper marriage. I don't think the government paper marriage is important at all, but it is something fun to talk about!

To simultaneously stay out of both the headlines and the Gray Bar Hotel?

Not every situation is perfect.
There is also the possibility that multiple properties are involved.

But why the Gray Bar Hotel, though? It baffles the mind. It makes no sense.

Man are "marrying" men. Groups of ten or more people are living together as "polycules." Guys like my cousin's unmarried boyfriend of twenty years have eight kids with eight women and don't pay child support.

Sorry, don't mean to create a tangent here. It's just an upside down world we are living in.

Ok, I understand now! Thanks for clarifying. If its working the system that we're talking about, I'm definitely on board 🤣

When people get in physical disagreements, one or more might leave in handcuffs.
