As to the alpha this is an objective description given to an individual that is the most desired rather than a title earned. I would suggest that it is also based on the culture/subculture as to which qualities make a male desirable to women. Secular women look for different qualities in a man than Christian women do, therefor a man would be an alpha in one subculture and a beta in another.
