Happy Reformation Day!

Over 500 years ago Martin Bucer was instrumental in gathering support of fellow theologians to approve 2nd marriage of prince Phillip of Hesse. It was difficult time time for reformers who were courageous in their opposition to Roman Catholics, but fell short of on courage when it came to approving polygyny. The pressures to confirm to traditions of men was just as strong and if fact stronger than it is today. Fortunately for us we live in liberal societies where monopoly on access to God through Catholism was dismantled.

I am finishing reading a book that reveals drama around this specific issue. It is titled The Attitude of Martin Bucer Toward the Bigamy of Philip of Hesse by Hastings Eells published in 1924. Later I will try to summarize it. It is great drama that is worth to be made into a movie or retold by people who are good story tellers.

The following work is about 66 pages where Martin Bucer states his support for polygyny.
As far as I could tell this is first time that it was translated from German to English.

I hope this will be interesting to hear from contemporary of Martin Luther and Philipp Melanchthon. There were other works published that around that time which I will mention later.
