Support New to all this and afraid to speak publicly

Hi! First time posting here.

I don't want to share a lot of details on the public forum here because we haven't told anyone yet that we're considering this lifestyle. So I'm going to be pretty vague here, and if anyone is willing to talk, I'd really appreciate a confidential conversation.

My wife and I have very little contact with our families due to abuse and extreme dysfunction. That's left us very lonely and overwhelmed raising our family. We're lonely due not only to the lack of family but also due to the fact we have so little time to be together. This has been part of the reason I've begun considering a polygamist lifestyle. We desperately need help with raising our family and we both have a deep need for a close connection to someone our age.

For several years, I didn't bother mentioning it to my wife because I knew there was little to no chance I would actually meet someone who would be interested in this kind of arrangement. That changed recently. I met someone who I instantly connected with. We share many of the same niche interests, the same world view, etc. We talked for about half an hour before my kids came up to us, and I could see she was absolutely devastated when she realized they were mine and that I was already married. But we hung out together for quite a while after that. She was great with the kids. They were singing her praises when we came home.

I had a rough couple weeks after that initial meeting. I knew right away that she was the perfect fit for our family. After several years of considering a hypothetical situation in my head, it now had a potential to become a reality, and I had to talk to my wife about it. Let's call them F1 and F2.

It took a while to work up the courage to talk to my wife about this. She was surprisingly receptive. She hates the thought of sharing me, but she agrees that polygamy is biblical and she shares my vision of all the benefits the arrangement would provide us. She's been lonely her entire life and she loves the idea of having a best friend who's committed to us forever. I knew they'd be best friends once they get to know each other. They're very similar, but F2 is more upbeat and would bring the kind of energy we need to our home. She also loves the idea of having another adult to take over when she needs a break, and potentially even give us a chance to have a night away from the kids for the first time.

I've seen F2 a few times. She seemed distant at first. It seemed like she has strong feelings for me and didn't know how to respond to the fact I'm already married. She was much more relaxed the last time I saw her and we had a great time together. She has no idea that I'm considering asking her to join our family. As far as she's aware, we can only ever be friends.

F1 and F2 haven't met each other yet. I'm planning to introduce them very soon.

I'm not sure how to go about this. I don't want to scare her off by proposing such a wild idea. I'm hoping to get everyone together for dinner, then start doing some fun outings together just to see how it goes having her around our family more. I have no idea at what point or how I'd ever actually ask her to join our family.

Does anyone have advice for me on how to proceed here? Also, I'd really like to find someone to talk to because I don't have anyone in real life I feel comfortable sharing this with right now. I especially want to hear a woman's perspective on this.

I'm not sure if this is good advice or not, but something I always do is to lead with jokes first and see how people react to the subject in general. You can almost always get a sense of their feelings without ever having to fully explain yourself or admit your own interest in the topic. It's a bit of a "safe" way to test the waters. I've had friends and family members who were immediately appalled by the idea, so I knew not to bother any further. I know your situation is obviously different but it may be an easy way to break the ice once you're all more comfortable/familiar with one another. I think family outings together first would be a great idea though.

That could definitely go either way. It could definitely come off as creepy. I'm not sure. I'd really like to just ask her straight up once I feel like we're close enough to be that honest. I wonder if she'll start to figure it out before I even bring it up.

Good advice from @FeministVampireQueen.

But, let’s just be honest. Just because it’s an idea in your mind doesn’t mean it’s anywhere near her mind. If you bring it up too quickly, without forming respect, it might just blow up in your face.

Take time. Plant seeds and see if they grow.

Being patient is really hard right now. We're in an especially difficult period right now and we honestly just really need some help. That's not my only motivation, but we're drowning right now.

She has a major life situation going on right now and she hasn't been able to get together with the family yet, but hopefully that situation will be resolved soon.
For sure. Let her see your family, and how it functions, and give her time to imagine herself as part of it. Even if she doesn't openly admit that, the thought may cross her mind.

I like this. I have some fun ideas for when we're able to get together. It would be awesome if she starts to picture herself as one of us.

Do you have any more advice? What's your personal story?

I don't see an option to edit my post. I meant to say, being patient is hard right now, but I've been exercising a lot of self control. I've been very careful not to overwhelm her. I'm very excited about her, but I try not to come across that way!

I like that approach as well, I think I'd prefer that if I was the single lady in this situation.

I don't really, mine was more just general advice anyway/ideas. Maybe some other ladies could help y'all out more, if your wife has an account or creates one, she could post the question in the "ladies only," section.
What's your personal story?
Forever single I guess, lol, here's my story though if you're bored one day-

There are other ladies with far better stories that may be more beneficial to your situation, like Peeling The Onion-

Jolene and Megan C as well.

I think you should get the edit button after making a certain amount of comments. A word of caution, seen lots of men get excited and blow it because they were too impatient. I haven't seen very many say they waited too long and blew it though.

I've been lurking this site for a while. I've read all of the onion posts. I hadn't seen your story though. What you wrote resonates with me a lot. My own faith story is very similar. I grew up in church and I thought I knew everything the bible had to say, so I didn't even bother to read it for most of my life.

Then several years ago I got frustrated with the dysfunction I was finding in the church. Not just my church, but the evangelical community as a whole. I got completely fed up with all the abuse, racism, and a lot of other disgusting things I was seeing all around me. So I decided to open up my bible and see what our community was doing wrong. I was shocked by how many things I took for granted weren't actually supported by scripture, such as churches having a pastor position. I'm not even sure now that hell and the trinity are even scriptural. Popular teachings and bad translations seem to reinforce these ideas that don't really appear in the bible. (I'm upset with these ideas if they're true, but I personally haven't been able to justify them scripturally, which surprised me.)

Polygamy is obviously another one of these things. But I don't need to argue that one here.

I'd like to talk to you about this more sometime. It's hard to write it all out on my phone right now.

Yes, this is exactly what I've been telling myself. I know it isn't going to work if I'm impatient. It's way too much to dump on someone so soon after meeting. It's been very hard though. It might be for the best that she isn't available much right now because I probably wouldn't be able to slow myself down if I could see her all the time.

You’re caught up in the endorphins rush of an enticing prospect. Anything is possible if God is in it but listen intently. All kinds of unintended consequences could follow

I'm glad you found it useful ❤️ It's like once you notice one thing, you'll see ten more.

I'd like to hear more of your thoughts on this. I don't fee comfortable in churches because I have very unconventional views. I question everything and compare it to scripture. Many of our modern teachings just don't stand up to scrutiny.

Besides that, I'm also just really disgusted by many of the people I meet in churches. I've witnessed a lot of abuse. It's largely normalized or hidden in evangelical circles. And I'm disgusted by the political climate also. I can't take anyone seriously if they claim to follow Jesus and then spew hatred toward immigrants. The two things just aren't compatible. I care very passionately about people who are abused, marginalized, or suffering. The current state of the "evangelical" community is extremely disheartening.
