Do only rich guys have multi wives? We read of the patriarchs of old that have had many wives. Is that, or was that the norm? If not true, then can we assume that just about every man had a few ladies?
My standard advice for men who want this life is:
#1: Get right with God. Do this life for Godly reasons and not selfish reasons.
2. Make sure your first wife is 100% on board with your plan to expand your family. Patriarchal idealism aside, your first marriage is the very foundation of your plural marriage! Make sure that you don't harm your first marriage when looking to add a plural.
3. Have a place/home where you can expand your family and not attract unwanted attention.
4.
Be debt free. Debt worries kill ordinary families and if you want an extraordinary family then get the
demon of debt out of your house!
5. Above all,
Men: you have to be
MEN to do this. You must be a leader who makes women want to follow you. Everything is riding on you. Everyone depends on you. Yes,
it isn't fair. Too bad. Climbing Mount Everest isn't easy or fair and not everyone can do it. Poly marriage is not far off from climbing Mount Everest.
6. Don't be afraid to be the
Man of The House. You don't need to be a dictator but you do need to be in control and by that I mean you have to first be in control of
yourself.
If you can't control yourself then you will not lead the people who want to follow a good leader. People (wives and kids) chafe at dictators (see Psalm 109 and in particular 109:8).
7. Having done items one through six then you will have delivered much and you will be in a position to ask much of your wives.
But you don't get to ask everything of them before they get everything from you. That is the price of leadership. Like it or not.
