The distinction would between living a monogamous marriage/lifestyle and having a monogamous marriage with various extracurricular activities. Either way, only monogamy was the only officially recognized marriage.

The Romans were not monogamous. They had mistresses, slaves, courtesans, and etc. and they certainly did what men do when they have a group of women at their service. Not unlike the current Congress.

The point that a man would have more children than just one wife could bear is compelling evidence of plural life. That the Apostles were not specifically mentioned as having more than one wife is itself unremarkable because poly would have been... -
