Response to Mike Winger's Train Wreck on Polygamy and Divorce

But you're right @steve, both Hebrew and Greek were commonly spoken, and Jesus specifically said he came first for the lost sheep of the house of Israel. So there is a high probability that he often spoke in Hebrew to most closely connect with this audience. He clearly used Greek also given his conversations with various Romans. Whichever language the gospels were first written in, some of his words would have been translated.

The point is that much of Yeshua’s ministry occurred in Hebrew or Aramaic.
While Greek was commonly spoken, it wasn’t the prevailing language, hence the title nailed to the cross in Hebrew, Greek, and Aramaic.
So the words of Yeshua that were recorded in the Greek Gospels were often not his actual words. Which makes our red letter editions a translation of a translation.
We have no way to be sure which conversion was in a particular language.

The majority isn't always correct!
That is so true.

Matthew 7:13 Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:
Matthew 7:14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.

The majority are the ones on the broad way/path "that leadeth to destruction,"

and it is the minority on the narrow way/path "which leadeth unto life,".

Let’s go back to the original words that were spoken.
Does anyone actually think that the angel that came to Mary was speaking in Greek?
That Yeshua gave the Beatitudes in Greek?
That the disciples in Acts were talking to each other in Greek?
The gospels weren’t written down immediately. There was a period of oral tradition for decades before they were written down. It doesn’t matter if Mary was speaking Greek. They were written in Greek decades later.

We know they were his words because the gospels are inspired. In other words God breathed. God told the gospel writers what to write so they’re accurate even if they’re in Greek.

Current evidence suggests that to be true, but there is no proof that other evidence hasn’t been destroyed.
The point is that most of what you believe that he said is a translation of a translation

We know that the original words were inspired. Period.

What was actually penned down was inspired. In other words when Luke’s pen hit his paper, what was written was inspired.
Of course, and you don’t have access to the original.

It’s called preservation. God promised to preserve his word and he did that through the vast mountains of manuscript evidence. We don’t need the originals. God preserved his word through the manuscripts which went to the ends of the earth in copies and copies of copies so that his word could never be destroyed or extinguished. Not by the Roman Empire. Not by anyone.

Remember that our all-knowing God didn’t want us to have the problems the Muslims have, unable to read the Quran because it’s tied to a dead language no one speaks.

He broke the link to Hebrew purposely in order that we all can engage with His Word with out the need to consult “experts” or other more arcane specialists.

Do you have a reference for this?
Sure. Here’s a few. Is 40:8, Ps 12:6-7, Mt 24:35, Mt 5:18, Ps 119:89, Ps 119:152, Ps 119:160, Mark 13:31, Ps 12:6, 1 Pet 1:24-25, Luke 21:33, Luke 16:17.

Some are more clear than others, but when taken in total it’s clear he will preserve his word.

Sorry, but you are reading into it what you want to.

I like this one.

Isaiah 40:8

The grass withers, the flower fades,
But the word of our God stands forever.”
You want that to mean His written Word, but that is an assumption.
His words spoke this world into existence, but you presume to define it as being what is between the covers of a Book.

Let’s just agree to disagree friend. God bless.
