We've always used the word 'they' to refer to someone when we don't know their gender.

I generally use they/them to refer to people I am not close acquaintances with:

"yeah I saw Becky today, they were droning about their dog and something about lasagna and I don't know"

"*pointing at Jeff* did you see what they were doing?!"

I've done that for 30+ years.
