Thoughts on periods. I guess.

I drew a blank trying to think of a good name for this thread because I'm tired and here we are.

anyways.

28When a woman is cleansed of her discharge, she must count off seven days, and after that she will be ceremonially clean. 29On the eighth day she is to take two turtledoves or two young pigeons and bring them to the priest at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting. 30The priest is to sacrifice one as a sin offering and the other as a burnt offering. In this way the priest will make atonement for her before the LORD for her unclean discharge.

So if I'm reading this right, a woman would have been not considered clean until 7 days after her 7 day period of menstruation were over.

Which made me think of:
You're most likely to get pregnant if you have sex within a day or so of ovulation (releasing an egg from the ovary). This is usually about 14 days after the first day of your last period,

https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/pregnancy-and-baby/getting-pregnant/

So.... if I'm reading this right, the first day a woman could be considered clean is also the day when she is most likely to get pregnant. That means something. I just don't know what.

I know that during menstruation a woman was considered super unclean, making everything she sat on unclean and such. I don't know how bad it was to be regular-unclean. Or how bad it would be to touch someone who was normal unclean. I know sex ended up making you unclean anyways. But it seems like if a man was TRYING not to be unclean or touch anything unclean really hard, he'd have just gone through 14 days of not really being able to touch his wife at all. And then on Day 15 he'd be like... well she's clean now so I could kiss her and pet her and still be clean. And God knows if he's all pent up for 14 days he'll be like ACTUALLY I WOULDN'T MIND BEING UNCLEAN 1 DAY and they hey presto the old lady is pregnant.

And thusly men are fruitful and multiplying by pretty much only doing what comes natural from following the law.

you’re not reading it right context is set in verse 25 this is talking about something abnormal happening there is no monthly prohibition on sex other than the time when she is actually bleeding. Lev. 18:19

Leviticus 15:25-30 NASB
[25] 'Now if a woman has a discharge of her blood many days, not at the period of her menstrual impurity, or if she has a discharge beyond that period, all the days of her impure discharge she shall continue as though in her menstrual impurity; she is unclean. [26] Any bed on which she lies all the days of her discharge shall be to her like her bed at menstruation; and every thing on which she sits shall be unclean, like her uncleanness at that time. [27] Likewise, whoever touches them shall be unclean and shall wash his clothes and bathe in water and be unclean until evening. [28] When she becomes clean from her discharge, she shall count off for herself seven days; and afterward she will be clean. [29] Then on the eighth day she shall take for herself two turtledoves or two young pigeons and bring them in to the priest, to the doorway of the tent of meeting. [30] The priest shall offer the one for a sin offering and the other for a burnt offering. So the priest shall make atonement on her behalf before the LORD because of her impure discharge.'

It’s just seven days or the end of the thing which shall not be named. This is why you keep them pregnant young man. So you don’t even have to acknowledge the existence of this topic.
I like it a lot when ole 'aunt flo" goes on vacation. Not being ceremonially "icky" for nine months is pretty nice!

I did have that thought but wasn't sure whether it applied to one or both situations. And I am woefully ignorant of the actual historical practices of the law. arf arf.
Dang it I really thought I was on to something there.

HAHAH!

Me: Why's it gotta be like this every month?

God: What part about multiplying was difficult for you to understand?

Sadly this topic was unavoidable for me. I grew up with a ludicrously sized nose and sisters. I always knew....

[25] 'Now if a woman has a discharge of her blood many days, not at the period of her menstrual impurity, or if she has a discharge beyond that period, all the days of her impure discharge she shall continue as though in her menstrual impurity; she is unclean.

Leviticus 15:25. KJV And if a woman have an issue of her blood many days out of the time of her separation, [this is not excluding her menses discharge, but rather identifying both a menses that continues beyond the appointed seven days of separation, and including any other form of blood discharge not menses related]or if it run beyond the time of her separation, [repeating the same thing] all the days of the issue of her uncleanness shall be as the days of her separation.

Here’s a link to Bible Hub showing virtually unanimous agreement that this law does not exclude her menstrual cycle but is rather including an extended menstrual cycle beyond the seven days typical of separation. The NASB seemed to be the only one that had it worded as “if she has a discharge beyond that period” leaving an ambiguous reading that could be interpreted as referring only to the non menses discharge as Pacman asserts.

Something else to consider is that there is a general prohibition in Torah about an issue from/of the flesh. The beginning of chapter 15 is all about a man with an issue. Chapter 15 sums up these issues and includes a bloody issue, an issue of mucus, or weeping sores (some of these mentioned in previous chapters) The remedy for all three is not mentioned until verse 13 and is numbered 7 days from when he is cleansed of his issue (from when it stops) and then he is to bath and wash everything, culminating in a sacrifice and atonement to the Lord for his issue. This is very similar to the purification rites required for touching a slain man, or a dead man or any part of a dead body, Numbers 19:16

The exception to this is in the verses following 15 and is restricted to an issue of seed, or touching something or someone who is unclean, which makes him unclean until evening and a bath.

The same pattern happens in regards to a woman with an issue from/of the flesh. It doesnt matter if it is an issue caused by menstruation, or a non menstruation issue. The remedy for any of these is found in verse 28,29 and is unsurprisingly identical to same time restrictions and offerings as any man with an issue.

The exception to this is listed in Leviticus 12:2-6, in which additional days are added to her count for uncleanness depending on the sex of the baby.

Both of these “issues” have other peripheral restrictions for those in close (but not sexual) contact and these contacts are cleansed by bathing and the evening of the same day.

In short, she may only be “impure” for the seven days of her normal menses, but she is considered “unclean” from the start of the “issue” until the 8th day after her issue is cleansed when the priest proclaims her clean.

Verses 32 & 33 sum up the whole chapter. This is the law of him that hath an issue, and of him whose seed goeth from him, and is defiled there with; And of her that is sick of her flowers, and of him that hath an issue, of the man, and of the woman, and of him that lieth with her that is unclean. [not her that is impure]

I remember discussing this previously.

Good lord. You certainly did. And totally covered like everything I had to say plus some....

It's almost as if I should read threads in their entirety before posting a new thread.....

here are other translations including KJV which say the same thing: It's not ambiguous its simply more clear English in the NASB but they say the same thing. I put it all in quotes so this doesn't take up so much space on your screen. if you simply look at the bold portions you will see my point.

Leviticus 15:19-28 WEB
‘If a woman has a discharge, and her discharge in her flesh is blood, she shall be in her impurity seven days: and whoever touches her shall be unclean until the evening. Leviticus 15:19-28 YLT
`And when a woman hath an issue -- blood is her issue in her flesh -- seven days she is in her separation, and any one who is coming against her is unclean till the evening. [20] `And anything on which she lieth in her separation is unclean, and anything on which she sitteth is unclean; [21] and any one who is coming against her bed doth wash his garments, and hath bathed with water, and been unclean till the evening. [22] `And any one who is coming against any vessel on which she sitteth doth wash his garments, and hath washed with water, and been unclean till the evening. [23] `And if it [is] on the bed, or on the vessel on which she is sitting, in his coming against it, he is unclean till the evening. [24] `And if a man really lie with her, and her separation is on him, then he hath been unclean seven days, and all the bed on which he lieth is unclean.

[25] `And when a woman's issue of blood floweth many days within the time of her separation, or when it floweth over her separation -- all the days of the issue of her uncleanness are as the days of her separation; she [is] unclean. [26] `All the bed on which she lieth all the days of her issue is as the bed of her separation to her, and all the vessel on which she sitteth is unclean as the uncleanness of her separation; [27] and any one who is coming against them is unclean, and hath washed his garments, and hath bathed with water, and been unclean till the evening. [28] `And if she hath been clean from her issue, then she hath numbered to herself seven days, and afterwards she is clean;

Leviticus 15:19-28 NIV
‘When a woman has her regular flow of blood, the impurity of her monthly period will last seven days, and anyone who touches her will be unclean till evening. [20] “ ‘Anything she lies on during her period will be unclean, and anything she sits on will be unclean. [21] Anyone who touches her bed will be unclean; they must wash their clothes and bathe with water, and they will be unclean till evening. [22] Anyone who touches anything she sits on will be unclean; they must wash their clothes and bathe with water, and they will be unclean till evening. [23] Whether it is the bed or anything she was sitting on, when anyone touches it, they will be unclean till evening. [24] “ ‘If a man has sexual relations with her and her monthly flow touches him, he will be unclean for seven days; any bed he lies on will be unclean.

[25] “ ‘When a woman has a discharge of blood for many days at a time other than her monthly period or has a discharge that continues beyond her period, she will be unclean as long as she has the discharge, just as in the days of her period. [26] Any bed she lies on while her discharge continues will be unclean, as is her bed during her monthly period, and anything she sits on will be unclean, as during her period. [27] Anyone who touches them will be unclean; they must wash their clothes and bathe with water, and they will be unclean till evening. [28] “ ‘When she is cleansed from her discharge, she must count off seven days, and after that she will be ceremonially clean.

Leviticus 15:19-28 NASB
When a woman has a discharge, if her discharge in her body is blood, she shall continue in her menstrual impurity for seven days; and whoever touches her shall be unclean until evening. [20] Everything also on which she lies during her menstrual impurity shall be unclean, and everything on which she sits shall be unclean. [21] Anyone who touches her bed shall wash his clothes and bathe in water and be unclean until evening. [22] Whoever touches any thing on which she sits shall wash his clothes and bathe in water and be unclean until evening. [23] Whether it be on the bed or on the thing on which she is sitting, when he touches it, he shall be unclean until evening. [24] If a man actually lies with her so that her menstrual impurity is on him, he shall be unclean seven days, and every bed on which he lies shall be unclean.

[25] ‘Now if a woman has a discharge of her blood many days, not at the period of her menstrual impurity, or if she has a discharge beyond that period, all the days of her impure discharge she shall continue as though in her menstrual impurity; she is unclean.

Vs. 19-24 give the instructions for during her normal cycle. (the seven days mentioned in Vs 19 starts at the beginning of her normal cycle not at the end of it.)
Vs. 25-28 give instructions for when something abnormal is happening (not at the period of her menstrual impurity, or if she has a discharge beyond that period)

Notice the difference? its the 7 days beyond the impurity. (vs. 28) that isn't specified in the first section but it is in the second section.

I would say the summary is verses 31-33 whatever your understanding of the specifics outside of the time she is actually bleeding it applies to uncleanness as it regards going to the temple / tabernacle. It is sin to have sex with a woman who is bleeding. (Lev. 18:19) It is also a sin to go to the temple / tabernacle while unclean. (Lev. 15:31) Sex makes you unclean for that day anyway (Lev. 15:18) so the idea that people had to avoid uncleanness perpetually would actually be a complete prohibition on sex. So if contact (sexual or otherwise) makes you unclean for the day then don't go to the temple / tabernacle that day. It really is that simple.

There was no need for me to come back at all.

Sooo fittingly perfect.. heheheh

Time for stretching exercises. I know that the law is spiritual.

hnnnnnng....

Ok so spiritually your father could be reckoned as whoever delivered the gospel to you. 1 Cor 4:15, yeah? And the seed is the gospel, and the baby that is formed is the new you through Christ. Am I on track so far? I think so. And so spiritually speaking you are your own mother, the seed is implanted into the old you and the new you begins growing. I'm comfortable with that because God was Adam's father, (Luke 3:38) but who was his mother? Just some clay, really. So far so good.

So I think now I have to take a good hard look at the period. (Sorry @The Revolting Man ) What does it mean? It doesn't mean nothing. God surely didn't create us a certain way and codify laws based on them without intent. Are there cycles, or seasons of spiritual fertility? Does God make us receptive for a time, able to receive the gospel, but if we fail to, is there a season where not only can we NOT receive the gospel, but we are in some way unclean and should be steered away from until the time is up and we are receptive again? Is it analogous to being delivered over to Satan? Is there sort of a rhythm to evangelism?

I can almost see it. A person rejects the gospel and their heart becomes hard. What good does it do to evangelize them as they are shedding themselves of the feelings and logic that was building to receive grace and they turn again to their addictions and fruitless behaviors? Maybe no good, but perhaps some harm as 'bad company corrupts good morals". A non believer who is no longer receptive to the gospel should mostly be avoided for intimate conversation because all they can do at this point is defile us with their words and ways. And yet God is faithful and merciful and stretches out His hands all day long to the disobedient. There may come a time when this impurity has run its course and they again long to hear the words that you speak (If you've left them alone, right?) and you can try again.

What do you think?

I've always read it that way. God knows what he's doing. If Moses was only codifying what the Hebrews were already practicing, it would make sense that they multiplied so quickly in Egypt before the Exodus.

Why does this subject make men uncomfortable? I don't get it. I never felt uncomfortable buying pads, just annoyed at the shopping experience: 5000 different options, some which play music, but none saying 'narrow'.
