Great/inspirational quotes

“If sinners be damned, at least let them leap to Hell over our dead bodies. And if they perish, let them perish with our arms wrapped about their knees, imploring them to stay. If Hell must be filled, let it be filled in the teeth of our exertions, and let not one go unwarned and unprayed for.”
― Charles Spurgeon

“When there’s something in the Bible that churches don’t like, they call it legalism.”
― Leonard Ravenhill

Maybe not so inspirational as much an echo from the past that made us smile
Recently we watched “Saints and Strangers” on Netflix
Episode 2
Talking to his wife
Steven Hopkins says

“ I’m terrified of what might come”

Elizabeth Hopkins reply’s

“ do not say that.....don’t ever say that to me.

Your the Husband , I’m the wife.

I’m not allowed to sign my name or wield a gun and negotiate terms and you . You, you Steven Hopkins are not allowed to be afraid.

you............. are not allowed to be afraid.
This is what has been impressed upon me.
Fear that is a deep respect, yes.
Leading in fear isn’t leadership, but then neither is false bravado.

“You can hold yourself back from the sufferings of the world; this is something you are free to do, and it is in accord with your nature, but perhaps precisely this holding back is the only suffering that you might be able to avoid.”

Franz Kafka

Welcome back Keith. Great to have your input again. Shalom

I was going through Proverbs this morning, and thought this to relevant to a lot of people not to share.

"Pro 20:25 NHEB It is a snare to a man to make a rash dedication, then later to consider his vows."
That seems to be what Paul is referencing in 1Corinthians 11:27-29
It is a snare to the man who devoureth that which is holy, and after vows to make inquiry.
KJV

I do agree with the sentiments of that version also.

Yes, it does seem that way.
That is one of the great things about proverbs, and scripture in general. One may look at something from a certain perspective or understanding, and come away with a completely different takeaway then someone else.

I really am starting to understand why you found this to be inspirational. It will be sad day when those who care about a community as a whole hold back become a larger group than those who don't.

I suppose all human affection can be worn out by constant failure to evoke a response from cold hearts. I suppose that it can be so nipped by frosts, so constantly checked in blossoming, that it shrivels and dies. I suppose that constant ingratitude, constant indifference can turn the warmest springs of our love to a river of ice. "Can a mother forget her child?" – Yes, she may forget." But we have to do with a God, whose love is His very being, Whose love is not for reasons in us but in Himself, Whose love is eternal and boundless as all His nature, Whose love, therefore, cannot be turned away by our sin – but abides with us forever and is granted to every soul of man.

Alexander Maclaren (1826-1910)

"I have been on the steady pursuit of Scripture truth for over 45 years now. I started this journey deeply indoctrinated by a narrow strain of Fundamentalist Christianity. So, admittedly, my course began greatly skewed and confined. As a result, much of my path has been about discarding inaccuracy, and undoubtedly I have accumulated additional error along the way. I am sure that a similar story can be said for many, if not most of our listeners. Nonetheless, I am content that our way has been decreed by God. My writings are a record of my own personal voyage of faith, as well as that of a handful of adventurers who have been in and out of my life along the way. Why do I make mention of this? To stress to you, as I have repeatedly over the years, that my writings have never been intended to be a creed for anyone. I have absolutely no corner on the truth whatsoever. Of course, neither does anyone else, regardless of how confidently and forcefully they may present their findings. It is my simple desire that my material be merely a source of assistance to you in your own personal studies – nothing more, or nothing less. So, take what you can use; and use what you take profitably in your own journey."

Clyde Pilkington, Jr. (also known as @clyde), author of The Great Omission, Due Benevolence and many other titles

A hero is not fed on sweets,
Daily his own heart he eats;
Chambers of the great are jails,
And head winds right for royal sails.
Ralph Waldo Emerson

The great turning point from disaster to salvation took place on Golgotha. It is not my faith that creates salvation for me; salvation creates for me faith.
