“What in the long term could end up being the fatal mistake of the Republican Party and perhaps also of conservatives and conservative-leaning libertarians is a failure to keep two things distinct: constitutional conservatism, and Christianity. Another nail goes in the coffin each time someone inaccurately asserts that the United States is a ‘Christian nation founded on Judeo-Christian principles’. While having a minor role in the founding, those principles were not its guiding force. Freedom of religion was much more decisive, including freedom from Christianity. After all, most of the early white inhabitants of this country were Christians fleeing other Christians. What most current conservatives don’t seem to realize is that honoring the Republican Party’s base of evangelical Christians doesn’t mean they should push a Christian agenda. Yes, the Republican Party benefits from widespread support among Christians, but Christians also benefit from the degree to which Republicans actually advance free-market principles and constitutional liberties -- just as do gays, Muslims and even the liberals who oppose the free market or the Constitution. Christians should further recognize that attempts to legislate Christianity or to legislate favorable treatment for Christians or Christianity are, for the most part, the Christian equivalent of Sharia Law.”
