It's just not the thing that God criticized him for. God criticized him for listening to his wife instead of listening to him.
Listening to one's wife is fine, but crosses a line when it comes between the primary relationship of a man to his Maker.
We can’t learn two things from the situation?
Who knows, maybe what he “listened to” was:
“Wait a second, hon. Let’s hear him out.”
Did he listen to that and fail to step in?
Either which way, he failed to protect her whilst he also disobeyed.
Maybe we are splitting hairs here. The two things really almost seem to be different aspects of the same sin.
The specific thing that God said was that Adam listened to his wife instead of Him. That is the Issue. The proper order was subverted. Adam was supposed to follow God and lead his wife.
God didn't say "if you fail to lead your wife you will surely die". Failure to lead the wife was not the original sin.
Disobedience to God (which went together with failing to lead his wife) was.

This also brings to mind Genesis 21 10-12. Abraham followed the wishes of his wife, but did so in a righteous manner. He took it before the Lord, and the Lord said to concede to his wife in in the matter of the sending out of Hagar.
Abraham didn't follow the lead of his wife in the scenario, he was actually following headship of the Lord in doing what his wife asked.
This shows an essential difference between the Genesis 3 narrative and this one here in Genesis 21. Adam listen to his wife and did not lead as he should have in this matter. On the contrary, Abraham listens to his wife, but made a decision based on the Lord's bidding.
This is all further confirmation that we should absolutely listen to our wives , but headship/leadership structure must be maintained. Yahweh > Jesus > Man/Husband > Woman/Wife > Children.
