Have you considered how marriage to the right concubine can be seen as legitimizing a king's rule?
This is why Solomon executed his brother Adonijah as he kept sneakily trying to get legal claim to their father's concubine, Avishag the virgin. Bathsheba naively didn't see what was going on but Solomon understood as clear as day what marriage to Avishag meant in the eyes of the people.

I think it is more about proving you conquered the other king, than about legitimizing yourself as successor. But, it has the same effect in the end.
